Teacher Testimonals

I have reviewed Dr. Trivedi’s DVD, General Chemistry version 3.3, and found it to be an excellent piece of software that teachers can use in the classroom and students can use as a textbook or for tutorial help. The animations are excellent and my favorites are the Voltaic cell and Lewis configurations. The Voltaic cell animation is the most thorough animation I have ever seen. If your students had this DVD, they would not have to use a textbook. There is more material on this DVD than any college chemistry textbook that I have reviewed. The interactive part of this DVD gives your students many examples
to work and therefore get a better understanding of the concepts presented in the classroom. At present, I use this DVD when students are absent from class.I give them the DVD and tell them to go to the section they missed and do the interactive part. They like it. Next year I will use this DVD as my textbook.

I highly recommend it.

“The General Chemistry 3.3 Chemistry software is an innovative step forward in providing for the student an interactive way to learn general chemistry. The interactivity is far beyond anything currently available, and students become engaged in problem sets with step-by-step solutions. The tutorial style lectures are impressively complete, and the format seems to encourage the students to spend more focused time on the subject. In the presentations of my one and two week College Board workshops for A.P. Chemistry Instructors, I both recommend the use of the software to the participants, as well as providing hands-on opportunities to peruse the software. In addition to use with my own my AP Chemistry students, I also use interactive portions the software with my Chemistry I students. It is amazing how complete the material is on this one single disk!”

This chemistry DVD is an innovative product! While it could be easily used as a replacement for a thick and expensive chemistry textbook, I have found it to be very valuable as a supplemental tool. It is terrific as a review tool for many students. For students who have missed time in class for one reason or another, it is absolutely irreplaceable. Kids who have missed my discussion of a topic get to hear a variety of voices describing the chemistry. Other students might need to hear an idea several times and this DVD allows them to hear a different set of voices presenting the chemistry after I do. The interactive questions give all students immediate feedback as to how well they are assimilating the chemistry. Every college and AP or honors chemistry teacher should look carefully at this DVD.

Dear Trivedi Technology:

I just wanted to express to you my thanks for creating the Chemistry 3.3 DVD. This technology has made it possible for me to have my students go home with a professor. This DVD is unlike any other teaching tool I have seen. Whatever chemistry concept we are studying in the classroom at the time is available on the DVD. My students can now go home and have a convenient way to learn the material while they review what we did in the classroom. The video clips are impressive and allow students to experience chemistry without the safety implications. The interactive problems are a great tool for corroboration of the ideas.

This DVD has proven to be an invaluable tool to my students. I hear things like “I reviewed the DVD last night and I now understand” or “ The DVD really was helpful when I used the interactive problems”. As a first year AP teacher it was comforting to know that my students had another perspective on the material and a reinforcement of classroom lecture. Your DVD has helped my students be successful in a difficult subject area. I do not understand why all high schools and colleges are not using this technology.

Thank you again and let me know when the Organic Chemistry DVD is ready.

The General Chemistry 3.3 Chemistry software is an innovative step forward in providing for the student an interactive way to learn general chemistry. I have just spent a couple of hours (more than I intended) looking at your General Chemistry DVD course, and I have to say it is the best thing of its kind I have seen. The various technology tools supplied by publishers are impoverished by comparison. I recommend this course for the student who wishes to prepare to challenge a regular university course, to prepare for standardized testing, or to learn chemistry outside a conventional lecture context. It is clearly a labor of love and you have my sincerest congratulations on your achievement as a pioneer. Sincerely, Bob Holloway

I have spent a tremendous amount of time reviewing General Chemistry Version 3.0 since our phone conversation. I have decided that it really is a good general chemistry text, and I have asked our bookstore to order it for my fall 06 general chemistry course. They will be in contact--it may be a while, because the bookstore is changing hands--new folks are coming in sometimes this summer.

"The General Chemistry DVD is an excellent and innovative product that goes far beyond the supplements that are currently bundled with General Chemistry texts. It provides a full set of General Chemistry lectures, demonstrations, examples and problem sets that are especially useful for:

  • Reviewing the material at a later time, especially in preparation for MCAT or GRE
  • Students who cannot attend all of the regular class lectures
  • Students for whom english is a second language
  • Students who may not be used to the fast pace of traditional lectures
  • A second perspective in addition to the lecture pofessor
  • Students who prefer or need a more visual means for doing homework

At Seton Hall University, we have used the DVD to assist our preparatory and general chemistry students. In one cohort of bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds, we noted significant improvement in their General Chemistry performance when the DVD was used. We are expanding its use to all our General Chemistry students and recommending it as a supplement in all our introductory chemistry classes."

"As a high school chemistry teacher, I would like to recommend the DVD textbook, General Chemistry, produced by Dr. Ketan Trivedi and Dr. Hervé Marand. My classes were a beta test site and the students loved using their DVD's. For many, it was a motivational factor, as they could use the interactive portions at home and get immediate feedback and help. For others it was a way to simplify what they were learning because they could see and hear the information at their own rates. When the first edition came out there was no question that I wanted it for my students! I have used it for two years and have not been disappointed! A student, who was doing poorly in chemistry, surprised me by making a respectable score on his Virginia Standards of Learning Chemistry Test. Later, we were talking and he brought up the fact that he had passed. He asked if I was surprised. When I answered 'yes,' he asked if I wanted to know how he did it. 'Yes,' I responded. His answer- 'I spent a week going through my DVD studying everything I had not bothered to learn in class!'"

"My Honors Chemistry students have used the latest version of the DVD in our computer lab and they really love it. I think they especially like the interactive parts, and video clips."

2009 Testimonials

I am currently enrolled in my 3 rd quarter of a general chemistry series I am taking as a pre-requisite for a Masters program in nutrition. I have an excellent instructor at my local community college, but I am not a naturally gifted science student and find I need a lot of reinforcement. I have had my ups and downs as far as feeling that I have a handle on the material we cover in class, especially as the material has become more complex. Several weeks ago, during one of the “downs,” when I was quite convinced that I was unlikely to ever get a handle on colligative properties, I googled “general chemistry DVD” in hopes of finding some sort of supplement that might offer me support.  (I’d resisted my search for a chemistry DVD for a quite a while because, in a similar situation last year with math, I found a really excellent series that did, in fact, prove extremely useful but had nearly broken my budget at $450!)   I was quite pleased to find that T2I2 General Chemistry, version 4.0 covers all the usual general chemistry topics and even more pleased when I discovered that it cost less than $80.  Needless to say, I ordered it immediately.  I am happy to report that working with the DVD not only cleared up my issues with colligative properties but also helped me get kinetics and thermochemistry under control as well.  I just took my first exam of the quarter and know for sure that I would not have received such a high score if I hadn’t used this product.  I am actually looking forward to our next units on equilibrium and nuclear chemistry.  I highly recommend this product to students of all aptitudes. It’s well organized and straight-forward for the snappy students in the group who can watch once and “get it,” but also great for people like me who need a few times through to absorb new concepts.

You have my permission to use this review in anyway you find useful.

Coming from Henrico County in Richmond, VA, I have been exposed to a couple attempts at digitalizing text books but none of those attempts have been successful. The problems with the attempts at my high school dealt with the monotony of the speaker's voice. With your DVD you incorporate humor with chemistry in a way that has made it interesting. Combining audio and visual learning created a learning environment that has helped me retain the information that I learned from first semester. Although I do believe this was an overall beneficial product to me, there were a few problems I had with it. The fact that it's not used across the university created an economic qualm for   me second semester in that I had a new professor and therefore had to buy the book. Though, having the book to compare with , I can safely say that I prefer the Dvd one hundred percent. The Dvd is easier to study with and if I am stuck on a homework problem, it is much easier for me to find the process on the DVD rather than the book. Another advantage is that when I am looking for the answer in the DVD rather than the book, I learn the actual process and concepts behind the answer rather than simply a formula.   The interactive solutions are, by far, the most useful part of the dvd. Other than a few problems with vista, which most things have, the Dvd was easy to use. In the end, I feel like this Dvd has made Chemistry a much more accessible subject to me.

- Akash Jain

I Just wanted to thank you for making it possible for the DVD to be available to us. It has made my life so much easier being able to see the information broken down in front of me anytime I please. In textbooks often it can be hard to find all the information relating to one topic but the DVD is very straightforward and I love that. The interactive questions prepare me in ways I could not do myself and I thank you for all that you've done.

Thanks again,

- Kaity Dean

The General Chemistry DVD is a really great resource; I use it to stay on track if I have to miss a lecture, or to reinforce material we have learned in class. It also helps me study for tests. I like the DVD because it puts what we learn into a different context and uses repetitiveness to teach the material.

Class of 2011

The DVD is a great educational tool.   I would be considered a visual learner, and this DVD gives many practice problems in every chapter. The DVD also explains everything step by step- a very helpful thing for me because chemistry is not my best subject.   I have had many friends that also use the DVD for help in their chemistry courses; they find it helpful to have so many practice problems when they are studying for exams and quizzes.

- Rachel Jude

Your DVD has helped me a lot with Chemistry.   I always use it to study and I especially like that I can click the "Notes" link to get information on each of the chapters.   Thank you for creating this DVD, I don't know what I would do without it! (:

- Katelyn Melton

The DVD Dr. Trivedi has designed is a great way to not only learn the information but to study for tests too.   The combined lecture and interactive natures of the DVD suit a visual, audio, and hands on learning style.   I have found it most helpful to see the material before we learn it in class, that way our class time serves to reinforce everything I have learned.   Overall, Dr. Trivedi's DVD is an excellent tool for all different styles of learning. I highly recommend it to anyone pursuing the general level of chemistry.

Biology '12

My name is Morgan Poindexter, and I am a freshman student at Virginia Tech. You have been my Chemistry professor for both this semester and the previous Fall semester. In high school, Biology seemed to be my best class, which is why I decided it would be my major in high school. I took Honors Chemistry as a sophomore in high school and did not do well. The fast pace of the class in combination with the teacher that was difficult to understand left me lost and confused. I scratched by at the end of the year with a C+ ,and was ecstatic because I thought it was the best grade I could get. I decided that I was just bad at Chemistry, and assumed that as a Biology major I would never have to deal with it again; I was mistaken. Going into General Chemistry this past Fall, I already felt defeated. I was sure that I would do horribly based on my high school experiences; I was again mistaken. You are an amazing professor. You make Chemistry easy to understand, but even your teaching abilities couldn't always make me understand. It is your General Chemistry DVD that has made all the difference for me.

It is one thing to be taught in class, take notes and believe you understand, but to apply that knowledge to tests and homework was at times a struggle for me. General Chemistry v. 4.0 has solved this problem for me. I never knew how to study for Chemistry tests before this year, but now that I study with the DVD my grades have improved. It is a wonderful tool. Every concept is explained clearly and with step-by-step examples. There are hundreds of problems that not only have step-by-step solutions but are interactive, and give you the opportunity to work through the problems. I am able to get all of the practice I need, and I learn what I'm doing incorrectly by going through the interactive problems. Last semester I earned a B- in your General Chemistry class - a clear improvement from the C+ I earned in high school level Chemistry. I understand Thermochemistry - which is something I never knew I would be able to say. Thanks to you and your DVD, I know I will be able to succeed in college, and I cannot wait until the release of the Organic Chemistry DVD!

Thank you for all you've done for me!

- Morgan Poindexter

I am so thankful to have the DVD to compliment with the course this year. I feel like it makes Chemistry a lot easier to study and learn out of class. It serves as an interactive addition to the course that is unattainable from any other source, such as the book, internet, or example problems. The DVD enables optimal learning because of its visual appeal to visual learners, and it's auditory component to supplement those who are auditory learners. The practice problems help kinestetic students, as well as helps students better predict the format of possible chemistry test questions. The DVD also shows videos that show the experiment associated with the content, which helps achieve a better overall understanding of the subject. Overall, the DVD is a very beneficial tool for any chemistry course, and I feel I would not be able to achieve an optimal score without it.

- Cara

I am writing you this email to let you know how great your General Chemistry DVD is.   Chemistry has always been a difficult topic for me, but your DVD has changed that!   You have managed to make every lesson clear and easy to under stand.   The interactive practice problems help to reinforce the material and teach you in a way that makes any problem a breeze.   Your DVD has helped me though your class this semester and has help to bring my test grades from the 60s to 90s.   Your DVD is great and it is a shame that your Organic one won't be out for years. Thank you for your amazing work, Ben Cavin

I love your DVD! I use it all the time to help me on the HW and to study for tests/quizzes.   It's easy for me to follow and understand so I actually am able to learn from it.   My favorite is the notes of each chapter that I'm able to open up and keep. I always save them to my computer so I can easily look at them.   I haven't had to use my textbook yet since I've purchased your DVD.   I don't feel dissapointed at all about spending money on the DVD because it is a wonderful resource and has helped me learn chemistry.   You did an amazing job with it and I think it has a lot of potential to be a substitute for a text book and even an actual teacher.

Thank You,

- Jordann Oberdorff

The DVD that Dr. Trivedi has made is an absolute life saver! It is so much easier to learn the material with this additional benefit to the lectures. If ever I didn't understand something from the lecture the DVD helps me figure it out. Also, all the practice problems that go with each chapter are a huge help when studying for the tests. They give you the time you should be able to do the problem in and a solution guide if you don't understand how to do it. This DVD has saved my GPA!

- Karina Platt

The DVD is great! Chemistry is tough for me and always has been.   I have the problem where I can follow and understand information during class but then on my own I have no idea where to start, the DVD helps me a lot.   It gives me the ability to go over the information by hearing it again instead of trying to make sense of what I wrote down in class.   The interactive problems are definitely the best part! Going through the problems step by step and then doing them on your own really helps you actually learn how to go about doing them. I think this DVD is wonderful and will help many students in the future, I would definitely recommend anyone taking chemistry to purchase this!

- Heather

I just wanted to let you know how helpful the dvd has been in helping me learn chemistry. It is easy to understand and the interactive questions help me to realize where I am having trouble with material so that I can fix my problems. With textbook questions, all I know is that I got the answer wrong, whereas with the dvd I can pinpoint exactly where I am having trouble. Not only is it easy for me to understand and learn from, but some of my friends that do not use the dvd in their classes have asked to borrow it so that they can understand the material.

Sincerely,

- Scotti Stiff

Dr. Trivedi's DVD is full of very useful practice problems with step by step answers.   It has been very helpful to refer to the DVD after class to reinforce the material.   I definitely believe the DVD has enhanced the learning process and improved my performance in the class. With the DVD, students are able to study as much as they want, as a result can achieve as much as they want.

- Jeff Walker,
Freshman, Virginia Tech

your dvd is amazing, it has saved my butt so many times. when i'm confused in class i just go and look at the dvd and do practice problems until i get it. theres no doubt the material is exceedingly difficult but your dvd makes it more understandable.   my only complaint is that i wish you would hurry up and make an organic chem one before i have to take it next year.

- Richard Kevorkian

As a student here at Virginia Tech, I have been exposed to many educational software required by my courses.  From my experience I believe that this Chemistry DVD is a superior method to create a solid foundation for students taking General Chemistry. The interactive function of this DVD ensures that students pay attention and understand the concepts in order to complete the sample questions provided.  Even though this DVD is very helpful, it does not ensure an A grade in the chemistry course.  It allows the student to learn the main concepts so he or she is able to apply them to questions given in his or her class.  Without applying this information, students will not be using this DVD to its fullest extent. The central theme of this DVD is the application of the chemistry concepts taught. Since the time I have purchased this DVD, I have not once needed a reason to open my chemistry textbook.  This Chemistry DVD is magnificent towards catering to students’ educational needs.  In a statement to sum up this DVD I would say that it is pure genius

The DVD is very helpful for various things. It creates a better understanding of not only the basics in chemistry, but the specifics of it as well. The material that we cover in class is all covered on the DVD and this makes for a great class review for the exam. The DVD is also clear and easy to understand, as well as easily accessible to the different subjects which can be chosen while the lesson is in progress. The different visual examples contribute to the understanding of the lesson and they are quite interesting. The DVD is truly a work of art and it's perfect the way it is.

- Denis Aliaj

The DVD is extremely helpful. When learning something new I have to go step by step through example problems, and the Trivedi's Chemistry DVD is excellent for this.

Last semester I took Chemistry and used a standard textbook and a program called ARIS as my resource for practice problems and further understanding of concepts.   The problems in the textbook and on ARIS were helpful in that they provided problems to practice, but in terms of understanding, the textbook and ARIS didn't really explain problems well enough for me to be able to complete problems on my own.   So while I could do the problems covered in the book or on ARIS, I wasn't able to transfer my understanding to different problems.   This proved to be problematic when it came time to take tests.   Regardless of how much I studied, and how many problems I completed, I didn't understand the material well enough to apply it to different problems.   However, this semester I returned my textbook and purchased the DVD.   I find the interactive problems much more helpful in explaining the material.   The DVD is great because it slowly weens you off of needing help at all.   You can start with interactive problems that involve step by step answers, and then move on to problems that expect you to understand the steps, and then to problems that you should be able to figure out on your own.   You actually learn how to do the problems on your own through practice and explanation.   Also, the DVD is great because it provides explanations without having to go a resource center.   If your schedule is fairly busy, you can use the DVD whenever you have spare time rather than working around the schedules of your classes, resource centers, tutors, and resource centers.   My favorite part about the DVD though is the many problems it provides to help you practice and become comfortable with the material.

I just wanted to thank you for putting together the General Chemistry DVD. It is SOOO much more effective than the textbook. Last semester, I had a professor who taught from the book, and the homework was all assigned on ARIS; After spending hours trying to solve problems, most of us just clicked guesses until the right answer came up, sent in the grades, and never saw the problems again. I love how the DVD actually shows you not only how to solve a problem, but WHY each step occurs the way it does.   When I used the textbook, the teacher would lecture and no one was quite sure what in the book was important. On the DVD, its great that the sections are broken down so if you have a specific problem, navigating is very easy. Without a doubt, ARIS cannot compete with the DVD's explainations and interactive problems. A+++

- Brittany Neal
APSC Freshman

I cannot even begin to describe how helpful your DVD is. I absolutely hated chemistry first semester because my teacher was unable to explain the concepts effectively and used the exact same examples from the book, which did not broaden our perspectives on how to tackle different problems. The PowerPoint lectures were slides that consisted of word to word definitions from the book, which did not help whatsoever.

Whether we understand the lecture you give that day or not, your DVD walks us through all the steps to make sure we are understanding each and every step of the process in order to attain the correct answer. Explanation of examples in textbooks just tell you how to do the math, but your DVD explains why you are using that specific value and what its purpose is in relation to everything else. This substantially helps in the overall understanding of the subject matter and is extremely effective.

This was a phenomenal creation and because of your incredibly effective methods of interactive teaching and the DVD, I look forward to coming to your class every Tuesday and Thursday and absolutely LOVE chemistry!!!! Even though you claim this semester is a lot harder than last, your DVD fails to make me think so.

- Jennifer Younes

The T2I2 General Chemistry software doesn't just make the textbook obsolete, it makes the instructor obsolete as well. This statement sounds like unreasonable hyperbole, but I am entirely serious. The DVD is such a fantastic resource that I really do believe one could learn a semester's worth of material in two or three weeks, all without stepping foot in a lecture hall. The interactive exercises, which give you real-time feedback and hints, are much more helpful than any homework sets I've ever encountered. I would most certainly purchase this DVD again, even if the instructor required an expensive competing textbook. Why struggle to keep up with a professor addressing 100 students when the DVD practically spoon feeds you at the user set rate and when you can repeat any section you didn't fully understand with the push of a button? I truly lament the fact that I cannot get my entire degree like this. -Alex Telionis, Blacksburg, VA

Personally, I really like the DVD. I've taken AP chemistry 2years ago in high school but I did not do so well; I don't think I understood all the concepts. The DVD however helped me practice and understand all the chemistry concepts. Even though I might not understand something said in class, I like how I am able to utilize the DVD to repeat anything as many times as I need to fully understand a concept. Also, the DVD helps to reiterate and use the concepts gone over with practice problems; it really helps how the DVD has step by step solution to see what I do and do not understand.

I also have another question/request I want to ask you regarding the final. I noticed that the final for my chemistry section is scheduled on May 13th however, I was wondering if I can possibly take it earlier (with the class section after my class). It is just because I need to have my dad come down to help me move out for the end of the semester but my dad has to leave on May 12th for a business trip. Would I have to fill out a form to request a final date change? Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

   - Sylvia Byun

- I believe the chemistry DVD designed by Dr. Trivedi is an extremely beneficial learning tool. Not only can the student engage in interactive problems, but the DVD also has a step-by-step interactive guide to solving problems at the end of each section. In my opinion this DVD is great for anyone whishing to obtain the foundations of chemistry. It allows you to work at your own pace and really understand and practice all of the material. I recommend this DVD to anyone who wishes to learn or brush up on chemistry. As a student who had already taken the class as an AP course in High school, I still found the DVD very useful, it allowed me to practice problems until I could do them ease.

- Nitu Lahar

I really enjoy using Professor Trivedi's CD. In his class this semester I did not use the DVD to study for the first test and therefore did not do very well on the corresponding test. However, for the second test, which we took last week, I studied around an hour or two a day for the week before the test and performed much better when I used the DVD's multiple choice questions and the interactive solutions that accompany them. I got 20 points higher on the second test than the first one. I just wanted to say that I believe that the CD is very helpful.

- Taylor Aughenbaugh

The DVD works great and it covers everything and you would need to learn in a general chemistry class.   It also explains itself very well and I the interactive problems really helps me to learn how to do all the different equations.   I've looked at the general chemistry book my roommate has and it is fairly hard to understand and costs around 150 dollars.   So I'm very glad I took your class and got the DVD.

Thanks,

- John Smith

I am writing to tell you about how helpful your DVD was in preparing for our last exam.   The organization of the DVD is superb; I am able to navigate through topics without any difficulty and I can skip to topics that are giving me the most trouble so that I can focus on them instead of wasting my time going through everything that I already know.   The practice problems at the end of every chapter are an excellent tool in understanding the concepts; the step by step solution guides are a savior.   10 times out of 10 watching the guided solutions helped me to understand and master how to do a problem.   On my first exam of the semester, I did not bother looking at the DVD; I scored a 50. After realizing that I needed to do more for my studying, I opened up the DVD so that I could review for the second test.   This time around I scored a 92! Thank you for creating such a wonderful learning tool!

Sincerely,

- Anna Corona

My name is Lelia Tench and I just wanted to let you know how the Gen. Chem. DVD helped me.   I had Dr. Trivedi for first semester and passed pretty easy with a B.   For the first exam second semester, I expected much of the same.   Much to my disappointment, I got a 50 F on that fist exam instead.   I'm an animal science/pre-vet major, and anything less than a B really isn't that acceptable.   So for the second exam I stepped up.   I printed out the notes from the DVD, took them to class every day, and reviewed with the notes and the interactive section on the DVD before the next class.   When it came time for the exam, I went over the notes and problems again.   I hated the math, but being able to go over each problem broken down in simple steps really helped.   I practiced the homework and DVD problems again and again until I understood it.   On the exam, I got a 92 A.   It's easy to use and easy to understand.   And when I needed quiet time to study, I just turned it up really loud and got my roommate out the room.   I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who contributed to the DVD, and also to ask for an O. Chem. DVD by fall semester. :)

Thank you!

- Lelia

I find the DVD to be extremely helpful to me in understanding concepts that I did not understand the first time in class.   It also gives step-by-step instructions on how to solve every type of problem.   This makes learning material much easier than attempting to follow the non-interactive instructions in a text book.   I really like this DVD and I would recommend it to other students even if they do not have him for a teacher.

On the first test, I studied for hours on end for days. I also looked over the DVD.  The key word in that sentance was 'looked" over the DVD and did not work all the problems. To avoid another failing grade, I knew I had to do something!  In preparing for the second test, I knew that I needed to do more than just review the notes and redo the homework problems and in class problems. I studied longer and did the homework problems over and over again, but what changed everything for me was the DVD. I sat down for about 5-6 hours and worked all the problems and listened to everything that was being said.  When I went in to take the second test I felt confindent that I would do much better than I had done on the first test and I did! My first test score was a 48% then my second test score was a 84%.  I believe the DVD, helped me to achieve that! From now on the DVD will be an essential study tool for me!!!

Thank you,

- Candace Hummer

The DVD's interactive quality allows students to absorb the material in a different way than just reading it from a book.   The intricate details of Chemistry causes many students to stumble over problems and rules.   The DVD's step-by-step instructions lays everything out so it is easy to understand.   In my experience the best way to learn Chemistry is to do as many practice problems as possible and the practice problems at the end of each section are very helpful.

Thoughts on T2I2 General Chemistry (Version 4.0) DVD-ROM

Before I begin my discussion on the DVD I will first provide some general background about who I am.   I am currently a freshman honors student at Virginia Tech and I am majoring in Biological Sciences.   In high school I took numerous AP courses and received 4 or better on all of them.   However, AP chemistry was not one of them.   As a result, I enrolled in freshman general chemistry in college.   I can honestly say that it has been the most difficult class that I have had over the course of these past 2 semesters.   In my general chemistry class last semester, I did not have Dr. Trivedi’s DVD.   Instead, I had the Silberberg Chemistry textbook, 5 th Edition.   Over the course of this semester, however, I have routinely used the DVD in my studies along with the textbook.   The following are some personal thoughts that I have developed concerning the usage of the DVD versus the textbook:

  • The DVD presents information in a manner that is much less overwhelming than the textbook.   For some, flipping to a page in the textbook with huge blocks of text can be overwhelming and distracting.   The DVD remedies this by presenting each point of information in a step-wise, linear fashion.
  • One noticeable difference in my studies is that I no longer feel the urge to fall asleep when I am studying the DVD.   Combined with real-time videos, a voice to listen to, and the overall presentation of the DVD, it is much less boring than the textbook. This is especially important for a subject, such as Chemistry, that some students might view as bland and unexciting.   Sitting down to read a textbook can sometime prove to be boring.
  • The DVD provides a much more hands-on approach to learning than a textbook.   Simply having the capacity to click the back button in the DVD to review something is much more convenient than having to flip through a textbook to find another page.   Also, I feel as though a college student is more likely to hop on their laptop and open the DVD than they are to open up a textbook.   This is especially true if the student is on a bus, eating, or in some situation where opening a textbook might not be the most convenient option.
  • The DVD does a much better job of walking students through practice problems than does the Silberberg textbook.   While the textbook does offer step-by-step solutions, it sometimes fails to cover why a certain step is done or taken.   The DVD solves this problem because there is always a voice to explain why a certain step is taken when working a problem.   The DVD continually reminds the user of previously learned principles.
  • While I am primarily a visual learner, some people learn best by hearing others.   Therefore, actually listening to the voices on the DVD is like having a teacher in the comfort of your own home.   Having a voice there to hear also reduces the possibility of misreading information in a textbook.
  • As for potential drawbacks of the DVD, I would cite its relative lack of what I consider real-world applications.   The textbook provides many additional case-studies and little blurbs about how chemical principles relate to the real-world.   For instance, on the subject of colligative properties, there is an entire after-chapter section in the Silberberg book on how both man and animals in nature utilize colligative properties (such as freezing point depression) to their advantage.   Such little blurbs and examples are, for the most part, absent in the DVD (with the exception of excellent videos that are present in the sections on chemical equilibrium and acid-base reactions).
  • Basically, what I am trying to say is that the DVD is extremely stream-lined, perhaps overly stream-lined.   Dr. Trivedi has done an excellent job of organizing the information and condensing the subject of chemistry down to its core principles.   Whether or not this is a drawback is up to the interpretation of the person using the DVD.

Moreover, I would argue that the DVD has greatly improved my recall ability for the material much more than the textbook ever could have. This ties back into the fact that the DVD is much more navigable and manageable than the textbook and I can bring up previously discussed topics with the click of a mouse as opposed to having flip through pages.

2008 Testimonials

Mr. Trivedi,

The DVD is such a great learning tool because of the audio aspect of the lessons. Hearing something, rather than reading mindless paragraphs from a textbook, is so valuable to learning and retaining the information. Most kids today are audio or visual learners and this DVD gives you pictures, videos, and best of all recites the lessons for you. The DVD also gives you interactive practice problems. This is so much better then just doing practice problems from a textbook because if you don't understand the problem the DVD will take you through it step by step.

-Tom O'Gara

I love using your DVD, it is a great tool that really helps me (a visual learner) learn, I have not even had to open my textbook. Thank you for making such a great teaching tool,

- Garrett Smedley

Professor Trivedi's Chemistry software is a breakthrough! I truly enjoy learning chemistry now that it is made easy! The software not only is filled with loads of practice problems and information, but it also captures my interest with the diverse voices and graphics. I especially enjoy the "notes" section of the CD where it allows me (a self-proclaimed slower learner) to take in more information at one time.

- Shannon Bishop

I also have some comments on your DVD:

I find the chemistry DVD to be very useful since it gives step by step instructions on how to solve many chemistry problems. I really enjoy the interactive aspect of the DVD, especially the practice problems section, where I can figure out the exact step in which I made a mistake.

Sincerely,

- Nachamai Singaram

I find the DVD to be especially helpful. I have Dyslexia and I can find reading a text book to be uninteresting and unrewarding, as far as remembering information. The unique presentation and endless interactivity are incredibly helpful not only when reading the material for the first time, but also when going over notes to ensure I have all the information. Not only that, but come study time there are plenty of practice problems which I personally find to be a great way to study.

- J. Cabell Neterer

The dvd is an excellent way to really understand chemistry. I think it would be much harder to comprehend the complexities of the subject if we were using a boring textbook. The interactive parts of the dvd and the practice problems create an entirely new medium for learning that a textbook cannot provide. I truly think that all general chemistry teachers would be wise to consider using this dvd as a required part of their curriculum.

- Ryan Becklund

Dr. Trivedi,

I have found the DVD immensely helpful throughout this year. The number of problems on the DVD allow me to practice certain concepts until I am sure I understand them, and that is invaluable when learning material or preparing for a test. One of my favorite features of the DVD is the interactive problems where they ask me to insert certain values as they work out the problem. This has been a great learning resource for me, and it ensures that I pay attetion while the DVD is playing.

Good luck on your presentation!

- Nicole Catalfamo

Words can’t describe how helpful your DVD has been! It is much more thorough and understandable than most chemistry teachers I know. I have shared it with struggling chemistry student friends of mine, as well as recommended it to my chemistry teachers back home to use in the classroom. The DVD was a great investment and I know I will continue to use it to help me further my understanding in anything chemistry!

- Kimberly Williams

The DVD has helped me out so much. Instead of just reading to comprehend the information, it is taught it to you step by step and full of examples, it's a great hands on program that really helped me on my chemistry test. I got an 88% and I think that if I didn't use the DVD, my grade would have been much lower. There are so many examples and practice problems to help you out. I love how if you get a practice problem wrong, it tells you step by step how to do the problem so you can see where you messed up. Overall the DVD is extremely helpful and I am glad i purchased it over the text book.

-Tara Meredith Chem 1035 at 12:30

To be honest, I don't see any way that a textbook could compare to this DVD. It's so convenient; I much prefer the topic menus to flipping back and forth through pages. Also, I really like the practice problems that tell you if you're right instead of having to search the back of the book to tell if I got the odd numbered problems or not, if it does list solutions at all.

- Kyle Maynard

DVD feedback.

Your DVD has been extremely helpful this fall semester. When it comes to studying, it makes things a lot easier. In my case, the practice problems are what helps the most. They allow me to work on what we've just learn in class and apply it. It also allows me to see what I'm doing right or wrong on each specific problem. Over all the DVD has worked well for me and I think i made the right decision by purchasing it.

In regards to the DVD, i think it is a very effective study tool and certainly has allowed me to succeed in your class. Specifically, i really like the step by step instructions on how to solve complicated math oriented questions and the large number of examples and review problems at the end of each section. I also have not encountered any glitches or mistakes yet, which is impressive considering the abundance of information on the DVD.

Sincerely,

- Chris Howell

I love the dvd. The ability to pause it or go back a few steps really allows me to learn the material at my own pace. Plus there are so many great practice problems to throw different situations at me.

DR. TRIVEDI,

The Chemistry DVD is a innovations study tool that has greatly improved my performance not only in class, through understanding the material, but continues to help in my lab. The DVD is very interactive. This allows me to work on problems that I don not fully understand until the concept is mastered. The DVD is and will be a helpful tool throughout the course and I only wish there was one for Organic Chemistry.

Very Respectfully,

- Christopher Livingston (Tuesday, Thursday 2:00 class)

i love the DVD, i love the practice problems because it tells me instantly on if i got it right or wrong, and it also shows me my mistakes as i mess up!!! i hope to get in your class next semester, because i like the DVD so much!

- Melissa Moreno

Hi Dr. Trivedi,

The DVD that you have created is an excellent aide for learning the basic material for chemistry. It is great to know that if I am having any problems with a particular section of material, I am able to consult the DVD, where it will give me a step by step tutorial about the process of solving a problem. I know that after I spend a certain amount of time practicing with the DVD, I will be able to solve the problems with the utmost confidence. I do believe that learning from a text book is a necessary skill needed to succeed in college. Because of this, I believe the DVD should not be a replacement of learning from text, but rather a supplement to help a student practice applying the knowledge learned to chemistry problems. Thank you for such a wonderful tool, I will be definitely be keeping this DVD for reference in my academic years to come.

Thanks,

- Chris Mehrvarzi

Prof. Trivedi,

I just wanted to let you know that your DVD has helped me enormously in chem 1035. The interactive problems really help me memorize the processes in my calculations. It is so much more informative that using a textbook, because, you are actually able to see and hear the train of thought for each problem.

- John Cavanagh

Trivedi,

Overall the DVD Is very helpful for me when I am studying. It helps me understand the information that you go over in class better. When I need help with a subject The DVD helps me to understand all of the subjects. Because the DVD is interactive, it seems as though I am in an actual classroom setting which helps me to get the subject better.

Thanks

- Chris Rigney

The DVD is a life saver. Anything that you do not understand in class you can go home and the DVD will explain it to you. It has tons and tons of practice problems.

The DVD is a lot cheaper than the regular Chemistry book and it's a lot easier to navigate. It gives a lot more explanation and it's read aloud to you. It has interactive problems that really helps me practice.

I like the interactive problems offered in the DVD. If I ever need help, I just go to whatever section I need help with and do a few problems. I also like the interactive periodic tables to help learn rules and interactions. The organization of the DVD could be a little better organized, but overall it is a good tool for learning chemistry.

- Scott Riley

Dr. Trivedi,

As a student who struggled with chemistry in high school, your DVD made the transition to college chemistry that much easier. From explaining detailed subjects, to giving explanations for each of the practice problems, this DVD makes my life easier and helps me better understand chemistry. I truly appreciate all the hard work and sacrifice that you put into making this DVD for it surely has made chemistry an enjoyable subject for me. Once again, thank you.

Sincerely,

- Blake Trabuchi-Downey

The DVD is amazing.   It is easy to use, clear, informative, and well put together.   I have already recommended it to other classmates who do not have Trivedi for chemistry.

I like the DVD so much, it helps me with out of class examples that I did not understand in class. Also the DVD is very interactive, as opposed to some rambling statements coming from a professor the DVD will let you click on various compound and helps you memorize things that would otherwise be difficult.

- Christian Laourdakis

Hello Dr. Trivedi,

I am in your 12:30 section and I can honestly say I love the DVD.   I like to review it after class because the examples you use in class are often the same or similar so I can be sure I have grasped the concept.   It is extremely helpful to be able to work on my own pace and rewind or fast forward whenever I need to.   I also like how the practice problems not only have the solutions, but tell you HOW it is the solution.   The voices and videos have also helped me remember concepts because they are in different formats than just reading and memorizing.   The one thing I wish it could do was pause in the middle, but after you explained in class about not wanting to interrupt, it made sense because a lot of times by the time they finished talking, they had answered my question.   Thanks!

- Carly Stephens

I find the dvd very helpful. When I don’t understand something there are a bazillion practice problems and it is impossible not to understand something. It is also a lot easier to find a subject on the dvd rather than the textbook. Instead of searching through many pages just to find what you are looking for you can just click the category and find it easy. Everything is explained and you can go as slow or fast as you want through the material.

Very respectfully,

- Andrew Jensen

Professor Triveti,

I greatly value the dvd you made for intro chem.   The lessons are presented in a way that are easy to understand and the interactive problems that immediately follow each lesson make sure that the student can actually put what they learn to use.   They also tell the student right away if a question was answered right or wrong- a huge improvement compared to waiting a week to get a written homework assignment back and not even remembering the problems by that time.   I wish I had a dvd like this for more of my classes.   Also, I have heard what a hard class organic chemistry is, and I have also heard that you are making a dvd for that class.   My conclusion is that I think I will wait to take that class until the dvd is out.   I think it might save me!

Thanks,

- Kristin Hill

The dvd has been about the only thing that gets me through the homework and the first test.   You pretty much have every type of problem on there and the step-by-step problems are life savers.

There is no way that I could have gotten through the first test without it, and I am sure that it will be instrumental in my preparations for future tests and assignments.

Very Respectfully,

- Brian Tignor

The DVD is a great learning tool.   It is affordable, and much more effective then a textbook.   I am very glad I own it. Keep up the good work Dr. Trivedi.

- John Dalrymple

About the DVD,

The chemistry DVD is a well put together tool for students.   It helps bring everything down to a simpler level and explains the concepts in a step by step manner.   I really like the interactive practice problems because if you don't get something the DVD will work with you in order to get it right.   Overall, this DVD is a very helpful resource to study with and it keeps your attention.

- Brett L

The DVD is a great learning tool that teaches all the steps you need to know. After you are taught the concepts you are able to practice them with the interactive problems and the multiple choice problems at the end of each "chapter".   I am very glad to have this learning tool, because with just the book alone, I don't think it would be enough.

- Brittany Gerstenslager

I really enjoy the DVD. It offers step by step instruction for the sample problems and provides an easy reference source for when I get stuck. The wide range of examples and practice problems all come in handy when I study for the tests. It is an innovative way to create fun, interactive learning experiences outside of the classroom. It definitely beats trying to teach yourself out of a book. ~K. Tucker

The DVD is an extremely useful way to learn chemistry.   It teaches in a way in which interaction is necessary and you learn by doing.   It rules.

The DVD has helped me a great deal over the course of the semester so far.

Anything that was taught in class that I did not completely understand was made very clear by using the DVD.   I feel as though it has helped me to do much better in the class than I would have if I were just using a textbook.   So it is definitely a very valuable tool. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

The General Chemistry DVD is amazing to say the least.   I never really took Chemistry in high school because my teacher was out more than half the year so walking into a college chemistry class I was completely overwhelmed.   The DVD allowed me to learn the material and actually practice it as opposed to reading straight out of a textbook which usually half the material I do not retain.   I spent several hours using the DVD where it explained processes step by step and why something happens in a way that everyone can understand.   I do not think I would have learned the material as well or been able to spend that much time with the material if it was not for the DVD. The fact that it is interactive and no slide is the same makes learning so much more exciting then reading another textbook. The Chemistry DVD was honestly a life saver, I went from knowing absolutely nothing to getting an A on my first test!

Professor Trivedi,

Great Job with the DVD it is a very valuable tool that has helped me to succeed immensely thanks again.

- Chris Heltzel

Dr. Trivedi,

I love your DVD!   It is interactive which captures and holds my attention.   It also has lots of examples which let me test my understanding of the subject being taught.   For the last exam, I spent less than 3 hours with the DVD the night before the exam and received a perfect 100%. It must have worked!!! Reading a textbook is monotonous and boring.   The DVD is awesome!   I also love the DVD when compared to traditional textbooks, because it takes up less space and is much lighter in weight.   When I go home for the weekend, I have no problem taking my tiny DVD, as compared to a 5+ pound textbook!   Thank you Dr. Trivedi! Kristina Ruffner

As a computer geek myself, i was very excited when you introduced the DVD   as the primary source for our class. I have never been one for walls of text that you get with books. Your DVD is much more inviting than a textbook. It keeps the subject material a lot more interesting than it would be if it was read. Also, the practice problems are a LIFE SAVER!!!! Without them, i would be completely lost on exams. Now, i do have one complaint, and that is the issue of lag. I would click the subject i want to review and it could take up to 30secs to pull up its subpage. This issue of lag is also prominent while working with the periodic table on some of the practice problems. For example, you want to know the weight of silver. You have to mouse over a couple of other elements to get to silver. With your current programming, the element is read as you mouse over them, so it basically reads off every element as i am trying to just get it to read off silver. This can easily be fixed with a slight alteration where you simply click the element you want read. Overall, great program Professor!!!

- Daniel Welch

I really like the DVD so far it really reiterates and helps explain all the details we learn in the classroom.

The practice problems also help quiz on if you really know the material or not.

I highly recommend it, it has worked for me so far.

- Kelley O'Such

I really like learning from the DVD. It is much easier than trying to make sense of a regular textbook. The interactive examples and problems are a real plus. I have not encountered anything that I dislike about the DVD.

I love the dvd! I find it very helpful. The interaction is so nice compared to just reading a book. I know that when I read school books I tend to daze in and out and miss important concepts, but with the dvd I learn concepts faster and it keeps my attention. The interaction even helps when I'm doing my homework because if I'm confused on how to approach a problem I can go back to similar problems on the dvd and practice them till I get them right. It is extremely convenient to have hundreds of problems at your use to practice when studying for a test, also it's a lot nicer then carrying a book. The dvd is a great help.

- Brittany Cole

Hi Dr. Trivedi,

Sorry for not getting this to you sooner, but I wanted to tell you that I really like the DVD because it explains everything clearly and step-by-step.   It's also nice to be able to see the animations of certain concepts.

Thank you,

- Sharon Bocher

The DVD really is really interactive, step by step equations (are more my pace), and watching the videos shows how what we learn can be applied. Yes, I have Vista and sometimes it is a pain, but the DVD is worth it.

That's my comment.

Thanks,

- Bailey West

I think the DVD is extremely helpful. The interactive problems make it very easy to practice and the lessons are very clear and straightforward.

I find the Dvd to be very helpful in learning and studying the material. It goes through everything step by step at your own pace. Also there are many practice problems to do including multiple choice and free response. The Dvd is a great tool for this class.

I have found when using the DVD to study for the exams and practice each lesson learned in the lecture, using this DVD has been the most useful outside source to help understand anything that I was unable to learn during the lecture. Thank you for creating such a useful tool to help me succeed in Chemistry.

Sincerely,

- CJ Norris

The chemistry DVD that I have been using for the fall semester 2008 has been a very useful tool in helping me learn chemistry. The user interface is very unique allowing the user to access information and to experiment with the periodic table by different elements to see how they react with one another even with things like polyatomic ions and things of the such. The DVD allows the use to go over the information at their own pace, and to have the stated information repeated as many times at they wish, which my increase the amount of students who learn the material by reviewing the text. The included practice quiz problems make it possible for the owner of the disk to review possible situations in chemistry that may be included on a test, homework, or maybe later in life if a particular person would like to pursue a career in chemistry.

- Alexander H. Carr

You DVD is very helpful. Chemistry itself is very scary to undergrads and textbooks only make it worse. Having a voice go through problems step by step makes things so much better.

I really enjoy the DVD. It helps me study before the exams and if I have some confusion during class I can go to the DVD and it helps a lot. I especially like all of the different voices. It's really funny when the voices switch in the middle of the sentence and it keeps me interested. I returned my book and kept the DVD and I really think that was a good decision.

Thanks!

- Staci

I absolutely love the DVD.   Anything that you do not cover in class, I can research on the DVD and understand exactly how to do it, with example for me to practice with.   The interactivity of this DVD is by far its best feature, making certain that I understand the material and how to do it without just showing me the answer every time.   I only wish every subject had such a DVD, but then college would be easy.

The DVD has helped me so much in Chemistry class.   It has been a few years since I have taken chemistry, so i rely on the DVD to refresh my memory.   The DVD is much more interactive than a textbook, and I learn much better from it.   I like the way that we have to enter answers into the blanks of the practice questions, it really makes me understand how to do the material.

Thank you,

- Rachel Jude

The DVD is very easy to use and interactive. I like how it shows each step on the practice problems. All students across the U.S. taking chemistry should have this DVD.

Here are my thoughts on the DVD:

Pros:

The interactive problems were excellent for preparing for tests and understanding problems that I may have been having. It is like having a professor in my room to help me with the problems.

The DVD menus make it easy to navigate and find the material that I want to look at. Additionally the ability to pause and review slides comes in handy especially while studying and trying to grasp the content.

Cons:

The only bad thing about the DVD that I can think of is that in the practice problems, sometimes you will get 10 of the same type of problem and then you have to shuffle through the pool of questions a lot to get the ones that you want. If you don't take the time to go through the questions you may get the impression that the type of question you were looking for is not there.

I am extremely happy with the DVD and it has definitely made learning chemistry much easier than it would have been from a text book.

Thanks,

- Derek E. Perry

The DVD is extremely helpful for studying the material. Before the test, I go through the chapters and do the practice problems, and I can walk into the test with confidence. It is probably the best studying tool that I have in college right now.

- Joe Krzywicki

I have been using your DVD to review everything you teach in class, and I have found that is very useful for reviewing the material before a test.   I especially like how there are so many practice problems which I can work out to increase my competency in the material.

Very Respectfully,

- Jimmy Callen

I am very impressed with your General Chemistry DVD.   Chemistry was a very challenging class for me in high school, and it was extremely hard to study for.   However, with this DVD I can go through lessons at my own pace and the practice problems are a life saver.   In a normal textbook you get 1 or 2 examples and then you only get selected answers to the homework problems.   With the DVD, you get the full workout for the problem and see every step.   I love this DVD and it is more helpful than any textbook that I have ever used.

Sincerely,

- Matt Hoffner

Sir,

My name is Amandeep Bhuller. I personally think the DVD is a really good tool to learn chemistry off of. It is very handy, everything is explained step by step. I am a kind of person who learns hands on. I cannot just study a book and learn the material. I think it is a different kind of approach, I understand things when they I repetitively do them. The DVD has everything right there and there is no need to waste paper. Its good and it kinda makes chemistry fun. The only thing that I would change was all the fancy fonts as the tittles. Come on Trivedi do we look like children. :) No but on the serious note its really helpful. Thanks Professor Trivedi,

- Aman Bhuller

I think the DVD is really helpful most of the time.   I like how the practice problems go step by step, and if you get it wrong you know exactly where you messed up.   It helped me prepare for the test by practicing.   It does get a little annoying sometimes when there are 3 voices to read one sentence or when they make them "echo-y."   That's when it's nice that there are printable notes!   Still, overall, I think the DVD is very beneficial and easier to understand than a textbook would be.

- Laura Snow

I find the DVD to be very helpful.   It is easy to navigate and goes along with what you are teaching us in class.   There are a lot of examples and problems for us to practice which helps me to understand what you were talking about in class.

- Nathan Cave

The DVD works well and enforces what you learn visually and audibly. The best part of it is the interactive problems were if you get an answer wrong, it will take you through a step-by-step process of how to do the problem.

I already sent one email concerning your dvd, but I couldn't resist sending another. When I was home for fall break, I took the dvd with me to work on the homework. Actually, I never got around to the actual homework. My sister came in when I was just getting the dvd loaded, and I ended up letting her play around with it, mostly with the stuff at the beginning of the year like the periodic tables--stuff she'd understand. But the neat thing about it is she asked if she could use it next year when she takes chemistry. I know it's more advanced than what she'll need, but the basics are still there, and interactive stuff like that holds her attention for way longer than books do. I just thought you might like to know that it's not just the college students who like and use your dvd; it's also the high school kids.

I never really studied before college, and this year, I had forgotten a lot of the chemistry information. This DVD is awesome! It really works because I am a hands-on learner and the interactive parts of this DVD really help. Even the buttons on the bottom to go to the next page keeps me focused and in tune to the notes. The different voices also add a comical aspect that really keeps me from getting bored and tired of studying.

- Ben Whit

Professor Trivedi's dvd is a great tool to have in order to sharpen your skills through many, many practice problems. Also it is a much easier reference tool than a text book, and the interactivity makes it also far more exciting than a conventional textbook

In regards to the DVD:

I have to say that I love this DVD. It is interactive and allows me to practice problems which helps tremendously. I took AP Chemistry in high school and did average. I wish I had this DVD back then because I know that I would have done so much better. It lets you go at your own pace and you can review as much or as little as you would like. Especially if you miss a problem, the set by step solutions help you so much! I also like that there is a way to access the textbook notes, however with this DVD you do not even need to use them because the material is explained so well. There is a range of difficulty of the problems which is helpful because you have an idea of what to expect of the exams.   I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone studying this level of chemistry.

- Alexandra Muhs

The thing I like the most about your DVD is that it sets my pace below what I normally work, which is too fast. During the explanations and practice problems the DVD does not fly through them like I might if I were doing it on my own. This slower pace forces me in a way to better learn the concept and processes that we must learn in order to be successful in Chemistry.

Respectfully,

- Daniel May

The DVD has helped tremendously, whenever I don't understand the concept in class or need to learn more the DVD definitely helps.

Dr. Trivedi,

Your DVD is an excellent way to learn chemistry. I usually go home a little confused from class, but as i go through the lessons and the plethora of practice problems i become very familiar with the material. I was able to get a 96% on my first exam because of the DVD.

Thank you,

- Basheer

The dvd has helped me tremendously.   It has everything I need to keep up with the speed of the class.   The dvd also lets me work at my own pace.   I can put head phones on and move from slide to slide.

- Brock LiVorio

I would like to say how amazing your DVD is. It has been the biggest help in learning chemistry outside of the classroom. There is no comparison to a book- the DVD has so many more features and bonuses. I will say that there is no point in even buying a book. If you had not made this DVD, I would say that chemistry would be much more difficult. It is a great study tool, and without which I would have failed the first test.

Thanks for making your DVD so amazing,

- Jess Mautone

I believe the DVD is a great tool to understand chem 1035 and grasp the general concepts of chemistry all together. I found it very useful when studying for our first exam, and I can guarantee you I will use it for all the exams to come as well. Honestly, the only negative characteristic that I can think of is the whole Vista problem. The DVD takes a while to respond on Windows Vista, but I am sure you are probably already aware of this. Other than that, I love the DVD. It allows one do navigate through material and have instant access to whatever topic he/she is looking for more quickly than a textbook. It is very well organized and easy to understand. The interaction aspect of the DVD is great too. I'm the kind of person that trails off in my thoughts as I stare at an open textbook. Therefore, the voices, the interactive problems, the navigation through lessons, etc. keep me pretty attentive throughout my study time. I appreciate your hard work and devotion to your students. You are most definitely my favorite professor. Keep up the good work, the DVD is great, and knock 'em out at your presentation.

- Tim Garrett

I enjoy your DVD most of the time the audio function helps me memorize important laws and principles.   I also like the practice problems.   I like the think of the dvd as a "Chemistry Cave" the black background and the light text draw you deep into the program and help me stay focused. Very Respectfully,

- David Reeves

I wanted to make you aware of what a great class you have. Some students play on their computers the entire class period instead of listening to your lecture! I suppose every teacher will have "those" students. However, what makes those students so "great" in your class is that they are playing chemistry on your DVD. What a great way for them to rebel. The University could almost have to stop paying you to teach, and just play the DVD, except for the occasional question that might need to be answered by a real person.

Being a transfer student, I thought I had enough college experience to do well in a chemistry class. However, the first day of general chemistry, I knew it was going to be A LOT of work. I started with the text book, but quickly realized I did not have enough time to sort through all the information, not to mention I did badly on the first test. I bought your DVD, and it has really helped with my studying skills. I feel like it takes less time to understand the concepts using the DVD then the text book so then I have more time to practice using the practice problems. I have already seen it's benefits from being able to do almost all the homework problems without looking something up.

Anyhow... Good Job on your DVD. It makes Chemistry a little less intimidating. And you're a great teacher!

- Amber Dellinger

Your DVD is very helpful.   I use it at least once a week and it gives me a lot of good information.   I especially like the interactive parts of it, because it makes me think.

Very Respectfully,

- Victoria Crone

The DVD is extremely useful when I remember to use it.   It tells me exactly how to do the problems that you told me I would forget how to do while in class. It's easier to use than the book because it gives many example problems and takes you through them step by step.   I'm not going to say it makes chemistry fun... but your DVD makes it a lot less boring.   Thanks!

- Laura Heironimus

The DVD is better than any textbook that I have ever used.   I have never been a fan of Chemistry but the DVD is actually beginning to change my feeling towards it.   If I'm having a hard time understanding something in class, I just come home and pop in the disc.   In no time, I have had all my questions answered.

It's also great for test prep because of all the problems on there with the interactive solutions.   The DVD is so good that I think high school teachers should fear for their jobs because they aren't needed with this great tool.

- Jason Reese

I just wanted to give you some feedback on your DVD.   I think that the DVD is very helpful and explains things very well.   I really like that you can pause it take your time if you need to.   I also like how it shows example experiments during some of the examples so you can see how the reactions take place.   I find the DVD very helpful and easy to comprehend. It is also very simple to find your way throughout the DVD. For example practice problems for each chapter are very easy to find. That is all I have to say about the DVD but all in all I think it is great and has helped a lot.

Sincerely,

- Samantha Rusz

I was writing in regards to the Chemistry DVD that you created.   I absolutely love it!   The aspect I love the most about it is that fact that I can go at my own pace by stopping or speeding up sections when necessary.   The other feature that I really appreciate are all the examples that are available.   Your DVD is a great tool that has helped me a lot.   Thank you!

Sincerely,

- Heather M. Calhoon

To whom it may concern,

I am a student in Doctor Trivedi's class and I have acquired the DVD for his class. This DVD is the most helpful thing that I have used for chemistry. It allows for extra review without using the book. The best part is that if I don't understand the days lesson or topic, I can go home and review it with the DVD. This way, I can learn the topic much more in depth and in my own way. This DVD is well created and I have not had any problems with it. Thank you for reading this and I hope it helps in your decisions in the future.

- Kristen Gorman Class of 2012 Virginia Tech

The DVD you made is great. It makes learning chemistry much easier than having to go through the book and trying to figure out the example. The narration and multiple examples allows me to figure out concepts I would otherwise have to ask you or a friend to explain to me. Thank you very much for making it.

- Chris Guida

The DVD is VERY helpful! It breaks things into simpler terms and works out the problems step by step. It really helps to take notes in class when we go over problems and then re-work them through the DVD. Without the DVD I wouldn't be as successful as I am in the class right now. P.S. You're class is very entertaining and fun. It makes learning a lot easier.

Sincerely,

- Stephanie Simms

Dear Mr. Trivedi,

The DVD that you created has really helped me gain a better understanding for chemistry. Before, I hated chemistry! I could never understand anything that was said in chemistry in high school, mainly because it wasn't interesting to me. When I received my class schedule for here at VT, I was expecting to have to take chemistry, but I dreaded it. During the first week of your class I did not have the DVD. I felt myself struggling, and I heard from other people that the DVD was extremely helpful, so I decided to give it a try. It has helped me out tremendously!! I love the step by step instructions on how to get to the solutions on the practice problems, those are the most helpful for me. The DVD helps me learn chemistry in a fun way, it makes a subject that is so complicated and difficult for students to understand and makes it seem easy by teaching it in a very understanding and light way. I honestly think without this DVD I would never understand chemistry!

Thank you!

- Paige Givens

Using the General Chemistry DVD is essentially like having your personal Chemistry Professor on your computer. You are able to view any material in the course at will. The DVD not only reinforces the information delivered in class, but even expands on it, relating it to past and future material. These slides of information are educational and user interactive. From the different voices, to user interaction, to countless practice problems, the DVD provides the ultimate source of Chemistry knowledge.

- Earl A Campaigne III General Engineering

Here are my comments for you DVD!

Dr. Trivedi's innovative DVD has transformed my chemistry learning experience! Of course attending lecture is a key point to succeeding, however, the DVD is wonderful because it goes even more in depth than we are able to in class due to limited time and can be accessed from any computer. For example, his DVD has interactive problems that teach you step-by-step the operations of a problem, educational material that is read aloud by various voices to keep your attention, as well as many (and I mean many!) practice problems that include solutions for further help. This DVD has come very handy in regards to my understanding and succeeding in Chemistry! Also, if the above features do not fulfill your understanding the DVD also includes a full glossary and notes section of pages and pages of typed notes. What I really love about this dvd is that it is an amazing study tool for tests, with all of the practice problems and instructions on tasks it takes the heavy load of confusion off of chemistry. Also, is alot cheaper and lighter than a $200 text book! I highly recommend this product! Ann Reilly The DVD is an extremely helpful tool to aid in studying. Things i do not understand in class are clearly explained on organized slides. After i finish all the lessons in a chapter and am ready to study, its very easy for me to go through the chapter review questions to review. All the questions i dont get right are clearly explained step by step.

- Edward Rodichok

I love the Chemistry DVD. It gives me as many examples as I need to completely understand the subject. The DVD allows me at my own pace and not be rushed. I listen and take notes during the lecture, then I go back to the dorm and rewrite my notes and add more material from the DVD on the subject. I enjoy using the program and I think it is a great investment.

- Allison Phillips

The T2I2 DVD is a dynamic learning tool that adds a new dimension to learning. It's like having a personal tutor with you at all times. The ability to interact with the DVD allows you to see and correct any mistakes being made while having the correct method instilled into you. Your CD is very helpful on homework and understanding the material. Whenever I cannot quite grasp the material the DVD makes the material completely understandable.

- Caleb Saunders

The General Chemistry Version 4.0 DVD really helps reinforce the class lectures. Whenever I do not understand the topic we are covering in the lecture, after the lecture I just turn to the DVD. The interactive examples really help me understand the various topics we have been covering over the past few weeks. -Tim Stegmaier I find the dvd very useful, what I like the most is the big quantity of exercises to do practice. And it's very good, also, that most of them have an interactive solution, so it explains you what was your error. The voices are very slow, but it's not a big problem, since I can press mute.

- Corrado Degl'Incerti Tocci

My name is Travis Neale, I am a student currently enrolled in your CHEM 1035 course and I am emailing you to tell you that I think your DVD is quite helpful. It takes the material very slowly and presents it in a way that I easily understand. My only problem with the DVD was that I had trouble finding whatever I was looking for, however, I no longer have this problem since I have started utilizing the DVD index. I give the DVD two thumbs up.

Sincerely,

- Travis Neale

In my opinion, it is better than using a textbook. It allows for interaction which I feel is extremely helpful, especially when learning about compounds and balancing equations. I like that when doing the sample problems, the DVD takes me step by step through each question. It makes it a lot easier to see where I am going wrong and how I need to go about solving problems. I have friends that have chemistry with other professors that have asked to use my DVD to help them understand concepts and how to problems because they do not understand what the textbook is telling the to do and where they are going wrong. I feel that it has helped me to understand the concepts of chemistry better than a book ever could. Overall, I really like the DVD.

Thanks

- Scotti Stiff

Your DVD is a great tool for doing homework and studying for tests and quizes. It has many great hands on tools that help me with actually viewing what is going on like the videos of chemical reactions or the step by step instructions of   how to do a problem, and by being able to click on the elements of the periodic table to either make a compound or to see the chemical equations of the compounds is very helpful

Its almost like having a teacher in my own room, whenever I want.   It thoroughly explains all the topics and the practice questions are a great help.   It helps to ensure that I know all the types of questions that could be asked and exactly how to find all of the answers.   If I can't figure it out then it works through it with me to help make sure I understand the material.   Its definitely a great study tool for tests.   It gave me all types of problems to solve and taught me concepts that I didn't remember for class.   The DVD has helped me a ton with this class. Thanks,

- Jake Douglass

The DVD is very helpful for me, because it is structured logically. The interactive practice options during lectures help understanding the material. The option to take notes might be unimportant.

I really enjoy the dvd you created, i don't have to use the textbook at all, and it saved me a lot of money I even bought one for my sister, who is struggling in chemistry and she said it has been a lot of help

- Katherine Yen

Hey,.

The DVD is a tremendous help to me, i really like it. It is very interactive, and all of the information is stated slowly and clearly. I find it as an extremely useful study tool. all i need to do to study it pop it in and watch. its included practice problems are great. I personally have very poor study habits, so this dvd has been a great help for me, and i really appreciate it. were was it when i took chem in high school. My only two complaints are about the problem section. my biggest issue its that some times it takes me awhile to find the practice problems for a specific section that i want to go over, i never haven't been able to find it though. but if there was an index just for practice problems, it would really be helpful. and second, some of the practice problem sections don't give me the time i need to answer the question before it gives me the answer, witch can be a bit annoying. other than those two things tho, the dvd has been a great help to me, and i love using it.

- Gus

Dear Professor Trivedi,

I prefer the DVD to any Chemistry textbook I have used before.   I have been in two different chemistry classes and used two different text books, but the DVD is much more effective than either book.   I like how there are still chapters and chapter outlines, then sections in each chapter.   One of the best parts to the DVD is the fact that it is interactive. The interactive periodic tables are highly effective and informative.   They allow the user to practice the different types if compounds and gives them the correct answers.   By far, the best part of the DVD is the practice problems at the end of each chapter.   The questions are a good way to practice the concepts learned in the chapter and there are ample practice problems.   Finally, the Index in the DVD is extremely useful and effective. Sincerely,

- Tony Caruso

I would like to let you know how much I appreciate your chemistry DVD. When in class, I don't always get a full grasp of everything you teach. However, I learn and remember by solving problems. Not only does the DVD have many problems to allow this practice, it shows how to apply what you teach us to the problems. The dvd is a great learning tool for me! Thanks!

- Cordero Tanner

Your DVD is an excellent way to review and study general chemistry. It can be slow at times but it doesn't bother my study habits. I really like the amount of practice problems it makes me feel more prepared for your class.

- Andrew Brown

Your DVD is a great tool to accompany chemistry class.  The step by step walkthrough of redox reactions really helps to explain the process.  The interactive periodic tables also helped me a lot when memorizing common ions and solubility rules.  The best part of the DVD is the huge bank of practice problems which are an invaluable study aid for the tests.

I am a student in you 12:30 general chemistry class and I wanted to let you know that I really do appreciate your DVD. It allows me to go over what we have gone over in class to gain a better understanding of the material. I also like that there are practically millions of practice problems to do. This allows for more of a hands on understanding of what we are learning in class. It is very evident that this is something that took you a lot of time and effort to create and I appreciate that. It has helped me very much.

Thank you!

- Kendall Cannon

The DVD really helps me learn. When there are times that I do not understand what is going on in class completely, I can go back and look up the information and teach myself using the DVD. The step by step instructions given to show   how to solve every type of problem are probably the most helpful part, along with the readily available definitions of the terms we need to know. I'm very glad to have this instead of a textbook. Thanks,

- Emily

I think the DVD is by far much better than using a textbook. The interactive problems really help me learn the concepts step by step. The notes that come with DVD are basically a back up for those who are not visual learners, as everything is written out word for word directly from the DVD. I have no regrets for buying this dvd as an alternative to the textbook (it's a lot cheaper too!).

- Amanda Khalil

Review of Dr. Trivedi's General Chemistry DVD:

I have to say that it is sometimes difficult to keep up in our large lecture class because Dr. Trivedi is required to cover a lot of material in a short amount of time. The DVD that Dr. Trivedi and his team developed has helped me tremendously throughout the fall semester. I was sweating the fact that I would not be able to get a sufficient grade on my first General Chemistry exam. The DVD went through each lesson and reviewed chemistry concepts, as well as went step by step through every example problem covering stoichiometry, Avagadro's number, and the empirical formula. After I used the DVD as a study guide and review for the exam, I felt more comfortable with the material and I felt that I able to keep up in class. I received a 96/100 (24/25) on the exam and I couldn't be happier or more proud of myself. I hope that I continue to keep up and maintain these high grade standings with the help of the General Chemistry DVD.

I feel that the audio aspect of the DVD is helpful because I find myself to be an audio oriented learner. The DVD also provides short video clips as learning tools, which I could assume helps those individuals who are more visual oriented learners. The repetition of concepts from previous lessons, I believe, will help me prepare myself for the midterm as well. I don't know what to expect for Trivedi's midterm... probably an exam that will be extremely difficult!!!! But I know that I can do well as long as I utilize the review of concepts in his Chemistry DVD. I also like the fact that the user can pause the DVD. I often use the pause button to take notes from the DVD in my Chemistry Notebook and I use them as reference later in class or while I am doing homework.

I don't really believe there is anything wrong with the DVD. I don't really use the Sketchpad tool in the DVD, but others may find this gadget useful.

I have heard from several individuals that Organic Chemistry is extremely difficult, and I feel that an Organic Chemistry DVD should be developed.

-Renee LoSapio

As a college student the two things I look forward to in any textbook or software program to use outside of class is price and simple, easy to understand instructions and teaching. The DVD does both of these. I saved 120 dollars by trading in the textbook for the DVD. As far as being user friendly, the DVD is great in explaining problems that Professor Trivedi goes over way too fast. Great buy and a great tool to understand general chemistry.

with respect to your DVD, I have only good things to say. The material is presented in a very straight forward manner, which makes it easy to follow, and there are several great practice problems. I always know where to look if I don't understand a problem. Also, the interactive sections make it easy to learn the material without having to beat myself up for hours over a problem. Thank you for making it interesting as well - the many voices are hysterical.

- Justin

The chemistry DVD is extremely helpful in helping to learn chemical equations. By going through the notes first, then step by step instructive directions on how to perform certain problems helps to keep information fresh in my memory. Also the quizzes at the end of each topic are great to test my knowledge and see if there is anything that I need to review.

- Kimmie Freeze

I would like to say that your dvd has been a helpful guide to CHEM 1035. The lessons are very clear and provide great "step-by-step" procedure in solving problems. It has helped me tremendously in better understanding Chemistry.

Sincerely,

- Cynthia Beam

I find that DVD does a great job at explaining each individual step when dealing with stoichiometry especially when the student is working with the practice problems found at the end of each section. It is easy to understand for every student.

- Miles Sonntag

I think your DVD is very good. I like it because it goes through many examples and has many practice problems. I like having the DVD to help me practice because it is like having note cards, but they are already made for me. It is a lot easier for me to listen and pay attention to a DVD then it is for me to read chapters out of a book. I think the DVD could be very beneficial for high school AP Chemistry courses.

- Renee Valiquett

This DVD make chemistry idiot proof. I will hate to meet the man that fails chemistry using this DVD.

I think that your DVD is a very helpful tool to learning chemistry. You can always rely on it if there is something you don't exactly get in class. I always use it after class to review what i learned by doing the interactive problems and the practice problems. It helps me in everyway. The only complaint i have about the cd is it doesn't pause in the middle of the sentence like i thought it would so i kept hitting the pause button and it would never pause. I finally realized it would pause after the sentence was completed which makes perfect sense. I would have to say it takes a genius to make such a great and helpful learning tool for General Chemistry Students!!

- Amber Teegen

The DVD is great!! I wish I had it when I was in high school. It has made a subject I used to hate, into one I can enjoy! My roommate has borrowed it once, and his girlfriend bought a copy after using mine a few times to help her on her homework and understanding the lectures (they both have different professors than you)!! It should be a requirement for everyone to have the DVD and use it (get rid of the book, it is too expensive and nowhere as useful).

Thanks for creating it.

- Taylor Pesek

The DVD is very effective. I like the abundance of practice problems.

- Scotti Stiff

I think the CD-Rom is really awesome. You did an amazing job at creating it.   I like it because it goes slow and it's simple.   I mean simple as in it is easy to navigate through it and find what you are looking for.   I would definitely recommend other students to buy it.   I can easily learn from the CD because of how it is set-up.   The practice problems are also a really great plus to the CD.   They help so much in trying to learn the material.

I find the chemistry DVD very helpful in understanding chemistry. It has so many examples and explanations that its almost impossible to get confused. I like how it takes the student step by step through a problem without skipping small steps. It's almost like having a personal tutor. Overall I think the DVD is an amazing help to understanding chemistry.

- Michael Sheets

The DVD is a wonderful tool. When I don't understand any given concept in class or would just like more practice, I can go home and "play" on the DVD for an hour or two and find that I have mastered the subject as far as a freshman chemistry student can master a concept. I also need to make note for the sake of any student who may benefit from this DVD, that it should NEVER under ANY circumstances be used to replace the instructor. It has enough information to where it could substitute, but the interaction between students and teachers is extremely important; this DVD should for the most part be used in the student's independent study and if CAN be used as a textbook substitute. I did not purchase a textbook because one of your previous students told me that if I used the DVD I wouldn't need it... he was right. I would recommend this product to any freshman chemistry student or anyone who desires a better understanding of the general concepts of   chemistry; it is a very useful study tool that I wish was available for all subjects .

- William Thomans Moore.

I just want to let you know what I think about your Dvd anyway. I think that it made my life so much easier because it explains everything in a simple and an accurate way. Also, The different colors and fonts in some of the words help the mind concentrate on the important things. It is very impressive that you were able to do all that! It is well written and organized and I appreciate all your hard work. I see no flaws in that Dvd and I think that you should sell it all over the world :).

Thanks

Your Student,

- Sarah Alabduljabbar

The Dvd you made is terrific. I actual practice problems related to the material instead of just looking over examples from class. It makes studying much easier. Instead of having get out my book, notebook, pencil, and calculator, I just put the Dvd in my laptop and go. It is really very sweet.

-Chris Guida

This is Sabrina Servidoni and I'm on you 12:30 class.

I really like your DVD. It has nice pace, explanations and examples.

I do a lot of practice with it.

- This is Sabrina Servidoni and I’m in your 12:30pm class.

I have to say that I really like your DVD.

It has good examples a problems. It is nice to practice and understand the subject.

The DVD is absolutely amazing.   The interaction and voices really help you a) pay attention b) learn c) enjoy yourself.   It is something ALL chemistry students should have; it is the best teaching aid I have ever come across. Awesome job!

-Christina

The T2I2 chemistry DVD is a helpful learning tool and adds a new dimension to the subject. It creates a one on one feeling as if you are having the material taught directly to you, a stark change from a large lecture.

Please make an organic chemistry DVD I think it would really help.

I love the DVD, it has helped me study a lot and I appreciate you and your colleagues for taking the time to make such a wonderful study aid and guide to the course. It is a wonderful help and since I will be moving on to Organic Chemistry I would like to see a DVD for Organic as well. Good Job on a wonderful program!

- Dylan Harding

Although I do not own the DVD, I have borrowed it many times from my friend. I regret not buying the DVD; it's awesome and it's helped me understand hard concept really easily.

-Steven Belt

II love the DVD! In a class of 500+ it's hard to grasp the entire concept of a new lesson in Chemistry but I used the DVD to study for my exam and within a 3 hours I understood and helped a classmate with the material we were going to be tested on! At first I did not know if I would like the DVD because I am a hands-on and I like to read my books and read them out loud and just look at diagrams and equations. I believe the DVD is helping me more than I could for myself with reading the information, interactions and complete practice problems / quizzes. Thank you, Professor Trivedi!!

- Danielle A. Nunn
First Year Student
Human Nutrition, Food and Exercise
Virginia Tech

I think that the DVD is an excellent alternative to a text book because of its obvious physical conveniences and also because it is interactive and very simple to use. The only thing that a textbook has, that this DVD doesn't, is about 4 pounds of weight I would have to carry around.

- Zach Brown

It works really well but i find my self to dependent on the software and how it helps you set the problem up.

I absolutely love your DVD. I had trouble understanding a couple of things but once I used my DVD everything was so easy to understand. The practice problems are probably the most helpful thing you could have done for us. Thank you!

- Lindsay Dortch

I find that the CD used in our General Chemistry Class (1035) is both well engineered and very helpful. Not only does it allow interaction with its users, but totally obliterates its counterpart, the textbook.

- John Donohoe

Professor Trivedi,

I find the software extremely more effective than a textbook has ever been for me. This could be due to the seemingly infinite number of practice problems. In addition it really helps having a teacher that is using a teaching supplement that they themselves helped create. The audio in the program, I usually mute mostly because I feel like it can be slightly annoying at times, not only for people around me, but for myself. While other times, I can enjoy the audio. In chapter two, with the polyatomics, I felt like that was set up extremely well. It helped me more than I ever could have imagined in learning the polyatomics. This past chemistry test was probably the best I have ever done on a chemistry test of that caliber difficulty (but because I studied with the DVD, it wasn't difficult!) . Like I said before, Overall the DVD is much greater than any textbook I've had in any class. I personally hope that this becomes the staple "text book" for all chemistry classes, if not for the country, at least for VT. Sincerely,

- Ryan Marlow

I think the software is great!   If I didn't really understand something during the lecture I always knew that I had the DVD to study.   To me it was better than having a textbook.

I really like the DVD because of the interactive problems, which are obviously something that a book is lacking. It is nice that it works through the problems step by step with you, so if you have any questions, you can just check the steps and see how it is explained.

You should make a DVD for Organic Chemistry, I think it would be helpful.

- Kelsey Heiter

Dr. Trivedi,

My name is Brooke Lokie, and I'm in your Tues/Thurs 2:00-3:15 general chemistry class.   You asked for our thoughts on using the DVD and how it's worked for us, so I hope this e-mail goes through, because it didn't earlier.   Anyways, I promise I'm not just saying this, but the DVD is amazing!   It really lays everything out for the user, explaining topics in clear and concise terms. Probably the most significant difference between using the DVD over a text book is the interactive problems at the ends of sections.   It's really nice to be able to understand step by step what went wrong when I answered a question incorrectly.   Also, since the DVD is set up with sound and color, and the movement of the words, I find the whole thing a lot more interesting and easier to comprehend than if I were reading the text book.   I definitely think you should produce a DVD for organic chemistry, my only regret is that i won't be able to use it, since i have organic chem next year!   So thank you for producing that DVD, it has made my life in terms of chemistry a whole lot easier.   As a matter of fact, because the DVD has helped me understand it better, i actually like chemistry and am thinking about minoring in it.

Sincerely,

- Brooke Lokie

Your DVD is very innovative and most innovative ways around a text book fail for various reasons. But I believe your DVD has proved this wrong.   The "textbook" has everything that we need to do well.   In all honesty you don't even need to teach class because the DVD does everything for you.   It has lectures, practice problems, videos, multiple choice, free response, and interactive periodic table stuff!   The only thing that is slightly annoying is the voices and the fact that they are all sound bites and it is kind of choppy.   But I still listen to them. I really liked the DVD so much that I sent an email to my AP Chem teacher and told him about it.   Hopefully he will see the benefits that I do in this great product.

I think I might go learn some chemistry because its so easy to do it!

Thanks a lot Dr. Trivedi.

- Daniel Linden

DVD is very interactive, and easy to learn from. Make harder Chemistry easier to learn.

I love the DVD.   It reinforces what we learned in class and if class was too fast, I can take the DVD as slow as I want.   It is extremely interactive and the thousands of practice problems are truly very beneficial.   This DVD is a great help in chemistry for me.

- Joshua D. Moser

"The software makes learning chemistry much more easier!"

- Kadeem Thorpe

I really enjoy using the DVD. I go over the information before class and then review it after class. It really helped me prepare for the test. It's not boring and I love the interaction incorporated on the DVD. I really hope you consider making one for Organic Chemistry (preferably before Fall 2009, so I can use it next year) :-)

- Mollie Blythe

I really enjoy, yes enjoy, learning chemistry with your DVD. It is very interactive and it gives me lots of examples and practice problems. With that it also shows some videos of chemical reaction, which really helps learning. And some of the videos or the way DVD interacts with you is funny and keeps you on the track. I also like the Notes button, from which you can get the notes for specific chapter and print them out.

- Saptak Saraiya

Dr. Trivedi, I wouldn't of passed the test if it wasn't for your DVD !!! I love it really !! You should do one of OChem!!!   Thank you!!

- Daniel Font

I honestly don't have much of anything negative to say about the software. The only complaint is that sometimes it lags. For example, if I press the pause button or the mute button it will take a few seconds to respond. Other than that, it has been a huge help. It is a much better way for me to study rather than reading a book. I love the interactive practice problems and I do think the DVD is what helped me get a 92% on the first exam.

Thanks!

- Kelsey Hodge

I absolutely LOVE the disk. The practice problems are wonderful but the step-by-step solutions make them that much better. It really helps me understand the material and how to work the problems. You should definitely work on a disk for organic chemistry. It would be helpful with that as well. Not dealing with a book makes things so much easier. I give it an A+! Good job, I know it took a lot of time and work. See you in class Thursday!

- Juli Jones

I think the dvd so far is perfect.   It doesn't make you laugh as much compared to coming to class but it's a good study tool.

- John Porter

I give the DVD a 5 out of 5 star rating.

- Stephen Hirsh

Your DVD is very helpful, and it explains everything in a very easy to understand, logical fashion. Normally, I would be struggling with reading through a textbook, that is not interactive and cannot help me solve problems in different situations. Your DVD encompasses many different problems and even when you don't know how to solve the problem, it's interactive step-by-step solution is incredibly helpful. I would recommend this DVD to anyone and everyone who wants to learn more in the fascinating world of Chemistry.

-Sincerely,

- Bryan Ho

The DVD is an effective learning tool, allowing the student to bring the class home with them. It teaches and tests the student very effectively and helps build a strong knowledge base. Combined with good teaching and discussion, the DVD is very effective.

Best wishes,

- Nathan Valenti

The chemistry DVD is extremely usefully. I decided to save money and only buy the DVD, and it has worked well. In high school I didn't get chemistry. After listening to your teaching in class I can get the basis of the material, then I go home and the self-paced DVD helps me solidify the content. It's like having your own professor at home. When I missed a class I could teach myself the material very easily just by using the DVD. I love the pause ,rewind , and forward features because it allows me to learn at MY pace. Also the problems in the DVD at the end of every lesson are the best thing that happened to me in chemistry. I finally could memorize all the ions and compounds, and it even became sort of fun! Chemistry fun? Wow I thought that would never come out of my mouth. Now that I think about it, I could probably do well in the course without a professor by just using the DVD, but it wouldn't be as fun without Dr. Trivedi! Go Hokies! Thanks for the DVD!

Thank You,

- Joshua Burns

The DVD is nice because of the price, but I only ever use the notes. The slides are kind of busy and I'm the kind of person who reads and remembers the page-it's not the same with the slides and it's kind of a pain to click through them for everything. I find it ten times easier to just open the notes and read through them like a text book. On the positive side, I prefer the notes to a textbook because they include only the most essential material for quick reference (whereas the details are covered in class to fill in the blanks.) Thanks,

- Laura Bradley

Pros

-Interactive problems act as a sufficient substitute for the professor when studying late at night for a test. Goes through all the steps thoroughly and actually explains everything to you out loud. The voices help a lot because just by reading it you may not be paying attention but with someone talking you through everything you are able to stay actively engaged.

- Everything is organized and being able to skip through steps makes it easy to get to where you left off last time.

Cons

-The voice samples can be very inconsistent. For example, when something along the lines of " 3 moles potassium sulfate" is being read out loud, three different voice samples will be used for three, moles, and potassium sulfate which can often be tedious to listen to when doing lessons multiple times. More streamlined voice samples would be helpful.

- Jcarr

Concerning your DVD, I have only good things to say. In lectures, I often find myself falling behind due to the fast pace of the course. On those days, it is very helpful to go back to the DVD and look up the lessons that we covered in class that day (since they very closely resemble the DVD lessons). I write down the title of the DVD examples you show us in class so I can refer to them later in the week. I've learned that college studying consists of 3 parts: the pre-studying, the lecture notes, and the post-lecture studying. With the exception of the lectures, the DVD is very helpful in learning material before (and sometimes after) class. Thank you for making the DVD interesting and extremely useful!

- Justin

Your DVD is really much better than any text book I have ever used for science before. I especially like how it is interactive so that I can do practice problems and see what exactly I need to work on. If i could make one suggestion however it would be to make the voices a little more clear. There were some things that I had a little trouble understanding. I did enjoy the humor in the DVD though. Whether it was intentional or not it was very entertaining.

Sincerely,

- Kevin Mark

I personally really like the DVD.   It really helps me to grasp what you teach us in class.   I really like how there are a lot of practice problems with each section.   I find that the DVD is very easy to navigate.

- Nathan Cave

I'd like to say that I really like the CD and find it really helpful. A couple suggestions I have would be to somehow incorporate some kind of index so that some concepts, definitions, etc. are easier to find

- Allyson Scruggs

I like the software and how it is interactive with the solutions. It is a better way to learn than from a book.

- Jordan Campbell

Your DVD is an excellent way to learn chemistry. I usually go home a little confused from class, but as i go through the lessons and the plethora of practice problems i become very familiar with the  material. I was able to get a 96% on my first exam because of the DVD.

Thank you,

- Basheer

Hi, the dvd is definitely very helpful. I especially like the timed questions because they give you a sense of urgency like there is on the in class exams. this helps you to prepare for an exam like nothing else. as a result i was far less nervous during the test, I was used to the pressure.

- Alan Kratz Jr.

Here are some of my thoughts on the DVD.

I feel that it is easier and more effective to learn when I not only read information, but also hear it and see it demonstrated. Therefore, I am a big fan on multimedia "textbooks." I think the DVD does a very affective job of presenting the material in a comprehensible manner. The information is so accessible that I was able to help a friend who is in a different chemistry class with a subject that we have not covered yet. I also am very thankful for the practice problems, especially the ones that provide interactive solutions. These were excellent preparation for the test.

- Stephen Marshall

I would like to say that the DVD is more helpful than any textbook i have ever used. The interaction helps a lot not only showing the steps, but reading them out-loud. I also enjoy how you can pause the DVD in order to have time to finish the problem on your own and, if you mess up, you get to see exactly where you messed up in the steps. I use the DVD on my own for extra practice, reviewing, and studying, and i have to say that it is one of the main reasons i have been so successful this year in chemistry.

Your Student,

- Cassandra Washington

I like using the cd because it goes into detail on problem solving and gives us more than 30 seconds to do the work unlike your lectures. One problem I have though is the speed of the readers. They talk so slow that it seems like it takes an hour to get through one subsection. You should make an option available so people can adjust how fast or slow they would like to be read to. Other than that I just wish I had more time to use it!

- Jeff Henderson

Overall I like the DVD and find it very helpful.  The practice problems help a lot and provide good practice before the tests.  The interactive problems help a lot in figuring out how to do the problems as well.  Also, it is nice to have all of the information we need to know in one location so we can find it easily if we miss something in class.  The information on the DVD is organized very well and if you go through it in order, it is almost impossible not to learn everything.  I cannot think of anything that would make the DVD better.

- Lucas Ross

My name is Marmara Perry, and I was one of your students from last semester. You may remember me from last month when I interviewed you for an English assignment. I am sorry for the long wait but, it is finally completed. The paper is attached to this e-mail, and I hope you enjoy reading it because I really had fun writing the paper and speaking to a lot of other students who have been influenced by you in positive ways. On another note, I have a friend named Ellie Faulkner who is sort of in the same predicament. She is having to write a paper on the cost of textbooks and basically, how they serve as a burden to students as far as cost. I recommended her to you because your Chemistry DVD is much better than the more expensive 190+ dollar Chemistry textbook, and it really sets a new standard on affordability and quality. I just wanted to give you a heads up that she will be contacting you.

Thank You,

- Larmara Perry

Thank you so much for creating the DVD... it is so convenient and interactive that I have become to really understand Chemistry. I have enjoyed your class and the DVD so much that I have recently added a Chemistry minor on top of my Spanish major. I think every high school, university, or any other educational institute should have the DVD instead of textbooks. It will save the schools money, and the kids will actually learn the subject. This can be an extremely important factor when kids get to college, because it can determine their future! If not for your class and the DVD, I would not be considering Pharmacy school and I would not be currently applying for a Pharmacy Tech job for the summertime. I truly hope that high schools around the country can have the privilege of using the DVD, because nobody should be afraid of learning Chemistry and nobody should have a lack of knowledge of the subject due to lack of interaction. Thank you again for everything!

Go Hokies!!

- Courtney Smith

As a previous student and a current TA for Dr. Trivedi, I found the DVD to be helpful to myself and my students, as an alternative to the textbook.   My favorite aspect of the DVD is the interactive problems within each section of the chapters.   I believe this is a good learning tool for introductory chemistry students.   After being shown the material students have an opportunity to work through problems that reinforce that particular lesson. Also, the demonstrations within the chapters offer a visual explanation that helps elucidate the material.   The DVD provides notes that when printed out become a text book for those who learn better being able to read and highlight the material.   So the DVD is in fact a multimedia learning tool that is able encompass a majority of learning abilities.

- Lauren Fischer

Your DVD is an excellent aid in learning basic chemistry.   The tutorials are easy to follow, while still very good in explaining the key points.   Also, the interactive sections help me tremendously, when I am doing calculation problems.   It provides a simple, yet strong example of how to do a particular calculation.

Thank You,

- Daniel McDonald

The chemistry DVD is an amazing help with the curriculum.   I am a person that usually doesn't do too well learning things outside of a classroom, but this is the first program that has worked to teach and reinforce things without confusing me in the process.   I have worked with other programs like the Chem SkillBuilders and those just confused me and actually were a big part of my withdrawal from chemistry the first time I took it.   Having the DVD as our resource turned things around.   This DVD combined with an effective instructor are a great combination for the success of any chemistry student.

Sincerely,

- Nathan Presnell

Overall, I really like the DVD. It is a lot easier to carry home than a big textbook. I already have WAY too many books to carry! I love that it has voices to go along with and explain the material that appears on the screen because I learn well when I can read what is being discussed. Also, I am a kinetic learner, so I need to do the problems myself in order to cement the material in my mind. The interactive problems are perfect to check my understanding after each section, and the interactive tests/quizzes on the DVD help to give problems that reflect the tests.

- Laura

Dr. Trivedi's chemistry is a great resource to use from a student's standpoint, it allows me to review and expand on notes taken in class and provides in depth interactive/non-interactive problems to pratice.   These practice problems allow the student to become more comfortable with the material and better helps them prepare for exams.

Sincerely,

- Tom Liskey

Overall I have been very impressed with the DVD. In a time when things are getting smaller and smaller it is only natural to do away with something as heavy as a Chemistry textbook and put that information in a very accessible format on an extremely portable DVD. I think that this is the first and possibly largest advantage. Computers are never very far from students and a DVD is certainly lighter and more portable than a ten pound text. In terms of performance I really enjoyed working through problems and seeing coefficients highlighted to tell where numbers are coming from when they are substituted into equations. Lastly, another overlooked advantage is the price. The price of a DVD is less than the price of a textbook. Considering the extremely high prices of textbooks a moderately priced DVD that is more portable and does a great job working through problems and explaining where numbers are coming from in equations is a nice change and certainly for the better.

T.A. Gen Chem 1036

I love the DVD Dr. Trivedi has created for this course. It leaves out all of the excess information that typical textbooks include. It teaches you in depth about the concepts the simplest way possible. The interactive problems are useful when first learning the information.

- Michelle Cosby

I just wanted to take some time to explain to you how much I appreciate the hard work and dedication that you put forth in making the Chemistry DVD.   It has been such a great help to me and I know many other members in the class as well.   The DVD is much cheaper than the textbook and a lot easier to understand.   The numerous practice problems that you have provided are such a huge help because they have the step by step instructions.   It is also very efficient because if you do not have the time to sit on your computer and follow along with the chapters you can easily print them out to take with you.   You have done such a considerate thing for all your students and I can not begin to adequately thank you.

- Brooke Mercer

p.s. please start an organic chemistry DVD :)

What I like most about the DVD are the practice problems with interactive solutions and the interactive lessons. They take you through step by step to show you exactly what to do. The solutions to the practice problems show you exactly where you went wrong and how to fix it with the methods behind the problem. You  learn why and how at the same time by actually doing it; you’re not just watching the DVD solve it. Melinda Hirt

The DVD is very helpful.   It is easy to understand and makes learning chemistry much easier and entertaining than a textbook.   The different narrators and occasional exclamations keep it interesting.   The practice problems that are worked out applying the concepts much easier. My only complaint with the DVD is that the input for the interactive problems doesn't often like my answer.   Overall, I think the DVD is very well done and feel that it has made CHEM 1035 and 1036 much easier to learn.

Very Respectfully,

- Jacob Mathews

I am one of Dr. Trivedi's recitation teaching assistants (TAs) and I have gone through a few sections of his DVD for General Chemistry. I think that his DVD is a very helpful tool for this class.   The interactive chapters as well as the practice problems are a great way to get the students involved in what they are learning. I especially liked the pop up quizzes during the sections that test you on the information that was just discussed. It helps to reinforce the concepts that are being covered in each chapter. The interactive practice problems are a great way to teach the students step-by-step how to solve the given examples, and they break down incorrectly answered questions to help guide the students towards the correct answer.   I believe the step-by-step interactive approach to the practice problems is a great way for the students to try to figure things out on their own. Some criticism I have for the DVD is that the sections in each chapter are a little slow-paced and sometimes rather boring.   I have also learned this material before, so that could be a factor. It takes a while to cover everything in the sections of each chapter, and thus it would take a while to cover the entire chapter.   However, if a student attends class there should be no reason for them to need to listen to everything in the chapter again.   I think the slow pace of the DVD is great if a student is struggling and needs some further assistance on re-learning the material.   I also think that it takes a very long time to go through all the practice problems.   Not every student has time to sit down for several hours to work through one chapter at a time. There are also pro's and con's about the color and voice variation of the DVD.   On the pro side, I think the various colors and fonts help make the topics seem more interesting and exciting.   The different voices help to stray away from monotone and help to point out the key points of the slide.   On the con side, I think that there is a little too much creativity in the DVD.   Because there are so many fonts and colors, it is easy to get distracted throughout the chapters.   Also, the numerous voices tend to get confusing and a little tedious after listening to it for a long while.   I think a small cut back in the colors, fonts and voices would be helpful to avoid distraction. Overall, I believe this DVD is very beneficial to a General Chemistry course.   It is much more entertaining than reading a text book and it is a lot harder to fall asleep when you are actively working through the material.   The DVD only points out the key points, key definitions, and main equations to use for each chapter.   Often in a text book, the reader gets so distracted by all the background information that they cannot figure out which material is really important.   This DVD is a great way to teach the students the important information in General Chemistry and helps them to learn (and teach themselves) interactively.

Thank you,

- Kayla Bulmer

I like the DVD. I have a hard time reading a textbook and learning from it. The DVD verbalizes the lessons which makes it a lot easier for me to understand. The practice problems are really helpful because if you get the wrong answer it gives a step by step solution.

thanks,

- Holley

Mr. Trivedi, I have used the DVD for half a semester and I have to say that it is pretty helpful.   The material is easy to understand and the practice problems are straight forward.   I like to use it to recap your lectures and a lot of times the DVD explains things that I didn't thoroughly understand in class.   It is an awesome study tool because it has tons of practice problems.   The only thing that I don't really like is the fact that it is really hard to type a complicated answer into the practice problems. I guess it just takes a lot of practice.   I have recommended this DVD to friends and even my girlfriend who is currently taking chemistry in high school.   Thank you so much for getting me away from that Chemistry book!

I really like the DVD and especially the interactive problems are very helpful in learning the information and making sure that I know how to apply the information that we get in class. The only thing that bothers me about the DVD is that you can not minimize the tab on your browser very easily and it takes over the whole screen. Other than that I really like it. It definately beats a text book!

- Heather Angolia

Dr. Trivedi's dvd is a great interactive source of learning.   I really enjoy using the dvd to practice problems or go back and review a section I did not clearly understand in class.   The practice problems are my favorite. If you do not get the question right, the dvd takes you through step by step so you can fully understand how the right answer was achieved.   I would recommend this dvd to everyone taking chemistry because it is a wonderful resource.

In overall, the DVD helps a lot.

To be specific, it is really helpful when reviewing the lecture materials.

When I was not fully understood the class materials, reviewing with DVD made me to understand them perfectly.

The questions on the last sections of each chapter are personally the most productive parts of this DVD. Since each question goes step by step, I was able to follow them easily. Those questions prepared me for the tests as well.

Here are my comments about the DVD.

I really enjoy the DVD and it makes studying for the test so much easier. The interactive problems are by far my favorite part because it really helps me ensure that I know how to do all the math that is required for the test. When it comes to test time, I am extremely prepared for the math sections. On the last exam, I didn't miss a single math problem because I was prepared from the interactive problems. I am very glad that I am able to use the DVD to help me study for the test because it has really helped me to understand the material.

- Kaitlin Moore

I am writing to comment on the DVD we use.   As you know I took my first semester of chemistry at another school and used a textbook.   I felt I did not get the chemistry background that I needed to continue to the next semester.   The DVD this semester is a great tool because I can easily go back and work interactive problems to help me with the principles I feel uncomfortable with from the first semester of chemistry.

I feel that using the DVD in conjunction with a competent instructor is a much better way of learning chemistry than out of a book.   If one tends to learn better with reading, you can turn the sound off and read and pause the DVD as you wish, if one learns better by hearing rather than reading, then the DVD accomplishes that too.

First, I love you class.   Second, I love your class so much because of the DVD. It is hands down the best way that I have ever learned material for a class.   If I do not understand something in lecture, it is so simple to pop the DVD in and review the lessons.   When preparing for tests, the practice problems are ideal.   I made sure that I was able to get into your class when making my schedule because I cannot imagine learning chemistry out of a book now that I have experienced your DVD.   I seriously wish I was provided with a DVD such as yours for every class.   Thank you for all the hard work that you have put into your DVD.   It is truly paying off =)

Your gracious student,

- Bri Hughes

The General Chemistry version 4.0 DVD is a valuable tool to have in 1036 chemistry. Despite it's technical defects every now and then I feel that it goes a step beyond the comprehension attained from reading a textbook and is an aid to those who are audio and visual learners, like myself. It mimics the General Chemistry lectures with the luxury of being able to hit the pause and back buttons.

I have used the Chemistry DVD for two semesters now and can honestly say that it has helped me tremendously.   By being able to learn the information interactively and doing the practice problems, I have been able to understand chemistry much better than I would ever had from a book.

Sincerely,

- Elizabeth Metz

I really enjoy the DVD. I like the fact that there are interactions because it shows you firsthand how to solve problems.  Besides if you do get it wrong then it shows you how to solve it.

Honestly, I actually really love the DVD.  The interactivity is so helpful and clears up all my questions when I get confused in class.  The practice problems really help me to see how well I know the material and if I don't understand it, then the solutions make me understand.

I suppose the only thing that frustrates me about the DVD is when the guy screams "NO" when I get a question wrong.  I only get frustrated because I don't understand it and then the man yells at me...increasing my frustrations.

Other than that I think the DVD is so much better than a textbook because it gives me immediate feedback and immediate help, where as a text book is just terrible to read and boring.

I made sure to get you again for CHEM 1036 because I know I learn much better from the DVD.

Thank you It is so helpful!

- Kelly M. Barberian

The General Chemistry Software provides me with the means to learn the fundamentals of chemistry with ease. Instead of reading boring pages in a chemistry book, I can take an active step in the learning process through the interactive lessons T2I2 offers. Last year I used the Thinkwell software as a learning supplement for my AP biology class. Regardless of the fact that biology and chemistry are different subjects, I have found that the way in which the T2I2 software presents information to the student is superior. Instead of watching movie clips where the professor is visible to the student, T2I2 keeps the student focused on the information being presented through 3D animations and interactive problems. The T2I2 software also provides the student with a multitude of multiple choice practice problems to increase the student's level of material familiarity and understanding. Additionally, T2I2 provides detailed explanations for each of these practice problems. The Thinkwell software lacked all of these learning amenities. Overall, I believe that my understanding of chemistry has been enhanced by the T2I2 software.

Sincerely,

- Chelsea Bradley

My name is Courtney Smith and I am writing this email with my friend Melanie Niemeyer, and we are both students in your CHEM 1036 class on Mondays and Wednesdays 4:00-4:50 pm. On our way out of class today, we briefly spoke with you concerning your DVD and its growing popularity. As we were walking back to our rooms after your class, we began discussing ways that we could potentially help you in the distribution of your DVDs. We are willing to help in any way we can. Our experiences with chemistry in the past have been frustrating and unproductive until we took your class and began using the DVD. Combined with your interactive teaching style, we have come to really enjoy chemistry and we would like to give back. We are planning on coming to your office hours on Monday, Feb. 4 to discuss the possibility of utilizing undergraduate students in promoting the DVD. We are looking forward to meeting with you on Monday!

- Courtney and Melanie

I was a student in your Chemistry freshman lecture, which I enjoyed very much.   I like to   compliment you on an outstanding creation: the DVD.   It has helped me study so much better, and it is a great tool instead of a text book.

- Patrick Drury

i am taking chemistry 1035 and i do not have you as a teacher. throughout this whole semester i have had a very hard time understanding chemistry so while i was studying for my test, a fellow student of mine let me watch your dvd and i felt like i understood the material better.   for instance, the previous test i took without the dvd i received a 42 on the test.   the average was around a 50 for the class.   the next test after i used your dvd for studying, i got a 88 on my test.   as you can tell there was a big jump.   thank you for making the dvd and i hope you have a lot of success with it because its a good thing.

- justin heidig

The DVD that Dr. Trivedi created is very helpful with the Chemistry class.   It explains things well and there are plenty of practice problems for students to do, to ensure that they understand the material well.   I believe that the DVD helps me more than a chemistry book would, in understanding the difficult concepts of this course, because it makes learning chemistry more fun, and that is something that the book could never do.

The chemistry dvd has really helped me a lot.   I feel as it has acted as a personal tutor for me.   I like how I can go through the lessons as many times as I need to, to understand them.   Also the interactive practice problems are a huge help because they take me step by step through the problem until I finally memorize the steps.   Then I can do the regular problems and the timed problems more easily.   Also I really like how it will take   you step by step through the solutions of the practice problems.

-  Anjali Mohindroo

I believe that the DVD is your greatest creation yet. The DVD not only provides me with live notes to follow along, but it also offers me interactive problems that I can solve to further understand the material that I have just learned. The textbook simply contains a bunch of words that a student reads and most of the time does not understand the materials he or she had just read. However, the DVD involves each student into any activity that is taking place. Whether it be clicking on the periodic table to learn the name of each element, or filling in the blank for balancing a reaction, the DVD is interactive, a great learning tool, and fun all at the same time :)

- Josephine C. Kenfack

1st year Biological Sciences

I love the DVD.   It is very simple and straight to the point with the main concepts that are important in any level of chemistry.   So many concepts that my high school chemistry teacher attempted to explain were much easier to understand through the DVD.   There are so many practice problems on the DVD which makes studying easier and more effective.   The only downfall to the DVD are the practice problem sections with no solutions given.   No matter how well I feel that I know and understand the principles of the material, I still feel better knowing that I'm right and am performing the right steps and calculations.

The DVD is very helpful.   The different topics are laid out clearly and are easy to navigate through.   The explanations of each topic are clear and easy to understand.   If, by chance, you didn’t catch the explanation the first time, you can easily go back to the section you missed rather than restarting the explanation of the entire lesson.   The only drawback is that you cannot pause whenever you want.   You can only pause after the explanation of a section is complete.   This sometimes makes it difficult to complete your thought before moving on to the next explanation.   Other than that, there are also several practice problems that you can complete for further understanding.   If you answer incorrectly, the interactive problems give a full step-by-step explanation of how to reach the answer.   To be honest, the interactive practice problems are probably the most helpful.   My friends in other classes often ask to borrow the DVD before they have a test.   They go through the practice problems and listen to the explanations of sections that they did not fully understand in class.

- Christina

The dvd can't replace class, but it is immensely helpful.   I can study and review whenever I want.   It is far easier to learn from the dvd than to read pages and pages from a boring textbook.

- Andy Wilder

I just wanted to tell you that I'm very impressed with the way the DVD conveys the information about each chapter.   Its extremely helpful to be able to review a complete lecture and explanation on each topic and follow up with the multiple practice problems that are available.   This not only makes the class easier to understand but also keeps me interested because it is easier to like a subject that is being absorbed completely. Success breeds success and with that i just think once you try the DVD and start getting good grades then any student would be crazy to stop.

- Jared Jodon

After talking to you during your office hours today, i am writing you an email with what i expressed at that time. I wanted to tell you that in high school i hated chemistry, but since being in your class i have actually come to enjoy it. The reason for this is because of your DVD. My problem in chemistry is i need to see the problem done out several times and see each individual step to get it. With the DVD, i feel like it is equivalent to sitting down with a professor and getting help directly from them, no offense it is actually better because its on my own time, in the comfort of my own bedroom, and if i get sick of the voices i can simply put it on mute.

  - Scott M. Moffat

I like the way the DVD explains each topic in the chapters step by step. I also like how you can pause the DVD at any point if you get confused or need some time to work out a problem. I also like how in each example in the lessons there are a few problems that are explained to you then there are a few interactive problems that work you through the problems step by step. Once you have run through all that it is nice to have several practice problems with an explanation after you have answered the problem. Thank you so much for putting your time and effort into this DVD.

- Anna Newton

I have taken chemistry twice since high school. I had to withdraw from my first college chemistry class because of a poor grade. This is the first time I finally feel like I am understanding chemistry, thanks to you and your DVD. Most teachers fly through the material, just assuming that their students are understanding what they are teaching. You take the time to do examples and make sure your students really do understand the material. Your DVD also allows students to go through the material at their own pace as well. I use your DVD all the time and I love it!

I find the chemistry CD extremely helpful.   My favorite thing about the CD is that the practice problems can walk you through the steps of the problem.   i find this extremely helpful, especially if i do not know how to do a certain type of problem.   The CD is a great teaching aid, and much more interesting than reading from a book!

- Trevor Hebenstreit

My name is Courtney Smith and I am in your General Chemistry class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-1:45. I am sending you this email to let you know what I think of your DVD before you go to present it later this week. I think your DVD is awesome! I would recommend it to anyone taking Chemistry. It is very easy to understand, and I love how it is interactive. The examples and practice problems are very clear and they really help to understand the material. The thing I like the most about it is how it explains how to do EVERYTHING. No matter how simple something may seem, it is clearly explained in a way thats really easy to understand. Just to show how much I love it, I am going out to buy another DVD that is compatible with the computer back home so that my younger brother can use it when he starts high school chemistry next year. I really wish I had this DVD in high school...it would have helped me a lot! Thank you for all of the work you've put into the DVD and the class. This is definitely one of the best classes I've ever taken! Thanks for everything!! See you tomorrow! Go Hokies!

- Courtney Smith

I really enjoy using the DVD.   The interactive features make it easy to use and easy to learn/understand the material.   It is a great tool for entry level students. I especially like the feature where you can have someone work through the problem. In a book, it'll show you how to work the problem, but I learn best when somebody teaches it to me.

- Kenny Erwin

The DVD is a very simple, straight forward, and interactive way to learn chemistry.   If you can't learn chemistry from the DVD, there is something wrong.

- Laird Horigan

I absolutely love your DVD. It is very hard for me to learn from a book and your interactive DVD helps me to understand the material so well. I like how you use different voices, colors and animations. One of the best aspects of your DVD is the interactive practice problems with the solutions. Offering the step-by-step solutions really helps me to   understand how to solve the problem. I wish I had a DVD like yours for every class that I take.

Thank you so much,

- Brianna Marie Hughes

I wanted to give you some feedback on the chemistry DVD. In my opinion, it is one of the best learning tools I have used. I personally find chemistry to be very complex requiring a lot of memorizing. As a result of using this DVD, chemistry has come more naturally to me as the interactive and repetitive nature of this DVD ensures absorption of the material. Ever since my freshman year in high school, I have talked up the idea of electronic textbooks with fellow students and instructors. I believe that they are without a doubt the future of learning. Computers are amazing tools that we all interact with on a daily basis. This is also true in the modern workplace. Industries have realized and captured the immense power of computers. Unfortunately, the integration of computers into the learning process has not been as rapid. I believe that students would greatly gain from interactive electronic learning tools such as Dr. Trivedi's chemistry DVD. The DVD is not merely an electronic version of the written book, it is an interactive and challenging electronic classroom. Even though the DVD is not perfectas of yet, I would choose this leading edge learning tool over a conventional textbook in any of my courses. The only suggestion that I can make would be to replace the DVD with a website that requires login.

Basically, your DVD has changed my chemistry life. I am not being sarcastic. Most of the concepts we have been learning this year were very difficult for me to grasp last year in my AP Chem class back at high school. Chemistry seemed just daunting to me. But your DVD makes it very understandable to say the least. Further, your style of teaching is absolutely unbelievable. Your ability to answer questions in a class of five or six hundred is just incredible. Most professors teaching classes of this magnitude are apathetic about the questions their students might have. TO say the least you have already impacted my views on chemistry. Thank you very much.

- John Luke Driessnack

I would like to let you know how much I appreciate your chemistry DVD. When in class, I understand everything you teach. However, I learn and remember by solving problems. Not only does the DVD have many problems to allow this practice, it shows how to apply the lecture material to the problems. This is the major issue that I have in learning and the DVD nails this obstacle.

Thanks for all your hard work,

- Matthew Enniss

Thank you for making you chemistry DVD. It is awesome.   I love how it is so straight-forward and comprehensive. I never though learning chemistry could ever be this easy.   I would only ask that you include better directions for installing it...

I'm sure my opinion of your DVD is consistent with the rest of the general input, but I love it!! From the opening of the DVD, everything is simple and organized. Every section of every chapter is laid out well -- opening with an introduction and adding topics onto that. Everything is also explained well with applied graphics, helpful videos and useful tables. The most beneficial part of this DVD is the extra practice/questions section. There are ample problems to establish an understanding of the section. If you cannot calculate the right answer, the solutions can be worked out right in front of you. The worked out solutions are a lot better than those found in textbooks because the DVD audibly and visually explains where each step of the solution comes from.

Overall, the DVD package is a win-win situation. It is more convenient and helpful than any textbook could be. Plus, it comes in a small box in which you can easily tote a periodic table (included) and other important papers (i.e. homework, etc.) inside.

Sincerely,

- Jeremiah Shiflet

I personally feel that the DVD is a great way supplement to Professor Trivedi's lecture.   It gives me the opportunity to get a step-by-step explanation of anything that I may not have understood in class that day.

Also, I found the practice problems extremely helpful for our first test.   With textbooks I exhaust possible question pretty quickly; but the DVD has so many that I don't have that problem.   If I had to suggest some changes to the DVD it would be to provide solutions for all the practice problems just so you can check yourself and unify the voices more.   I find the voices kind of annoying so I always work with the sound muted but if they were from the same person I probably would not.   Overall,   I am really glad we use this instead of a heavy, expensive text book! Thanks Professor Trivedi and all those that helped him produce the DVD, Alex Schiavoni

Your DVD is the greatest learning tool I have ever experience for any science course I have taken.   It does not over-complicate things, yet it does not try to make things too simple.   You are a genius.

Thanks!

I find the dvd to be very helpful.   The interactive way in which the dvd teaches chemistry is very accessible and explains the principles well.   By doing the review questions, I was able to do well on the first test.

I am writing you this email about your DVD. I would just like to say that the DVD is better than most books on any text book, i have ever read. The basic reason for that is the inter-activeness of the DVD. When one reads about something in text books the book doesn't; 1. read to you, 2. replies to queries, 3. has questions with the answer and explanations with examples like videos, animations, audio etc. Bottom lime is that it is easy to use, and has tremendously helped me prepare for tests and be better prepared for lectures.

- Suyash Das

This was the first course I have ever taken with a   DVD rather than a textbook and I think it has helped me a lot.   The DVD supplies the student with the necessary information and nothing more.   Rather than reading a lot of material to learn a concept, one can simply watch the specific DVD section and learn it very quickly.   In addition, the number of practice problems are also a great help.   The fact that they have solutions are even better.   This helps the student to learn what mistakes he or she is making. Overall, the DVD is much better than any textbook would ever be.

This message is on behalf of the DVD. I think the DVD is a great way to review everything we have covered in class. It walks us through everything step by step with lesson overviews, reviews, movie demonstrations, and interactive questions. It makes the material seem much easier and it is a great study guide for tests. It is also a lot more enjoyable and less cumbersome than a textbook.

- Nick Higgins

The DVD is good and works well to communicate the ideas across to the class. Some of the transitions from slide to slide are a little rough, but over all the DVD is an effective educational tool and works well.

Sincerely,

- Alexander Oliver

The DVD is a great resource to have. The step by step problems and solutions is a great way to thoroughly understand what is being taught. It has helped me through every aspect of my chemistry class. The only problem is that sometimes it will go too slow, which for some would be an advantage. It is proving to become an asset to my chemistry class and is 10x better than any text book.

- Bob Hoke

The DVD is an effective and easy way to get students to learn and interact with the material without losing interest.   From personal experience with this material and a class so big i do not get the proper teaching focus like you would in a classroom with 20 kids, but the DVD bridges this gap and helps improve the learning process.   I think the DVD is great and works good

Your DVD has been a great help in chemistry this semester. It gives a nice change to the same old problems out of the book. It gets you thinking and really reinforces that materials that you go over in class. The best part about it are the different parts to it, I do not go cross eyed looking at it like I do a regular text book. I think it is very beneficial to all students taking chemistry.

Sincerely,

Brittany Wilkerson

I really find the DVD useful. I prefer watching the dvd rather than reading a book because it is easy to pay attention to. The lessons that are actually taught on the DVD as well as the interactive practice exercises are an immense help.

About the DVD, I would say that it is almost painfully deliberate in teaching chemistry; it goes through each and every concept thoroughly and slowly to make sure the listener understands the topics at hand (but it does a great job).   The numerous examples help to demonstrate the points presented to illustrate chemistry more fully to the student.

- Rob Lyerly

I think the DVD is extremely helpful. It explains the chemistry that we are learning on a step by step basis and reinforces the lessons that was taught in class that day. The interactive lessons on the DVD are also useful because it explains the processes and then lets the student try on their own, it almost creates an one-on-one lesson, but its on a computer. The practice problems help too because it allows the student to practice what was just taught in the chapter or section and the interaction of it all makes it more entertaining than doing problems in the back of the book. Personally, I believe the DVD is much more helpful than the book could have ever been for me.

-Kelly Barber

"The DVD is an extremely helpful and useful tool for freshman Chemistry students.   The structure of the DVD explains many important aspects of the subject, that could not be explained in a lecture."

        - Jorden Harman
Freshman Biological Sciences Major

In many respects, it is easier than a book, because it is as if someone is there explaining the concepts to you step by step.   Also, when a text book is used, I sometimes get bored with reading it and just quit, but with the DVD I finish the whole lesson with no problem.
