to be an excellent piece of software that teachers can use in the classroom and
students can use as a textbook or for tutorial help. The animations are
excellent and my favorites are the Voltaic cell and Lewis configurations. The
Voltaic cell animation is the most thorough animation I have ever seen. If
your students had this DVD, they would not have to use a textbook. There is
more material on this DVD than any college chemistry textbook that I have
reviewed. The interactive part of this DVD gives your students many examples I highly recommend it. - Thomas S. Boyd

The interactivity is far beyond anything currently available, and students become engaged in problem sets with step-by-step solutions. The tutorial style lectures are impressively complete, and the format seems to encourage the students to spend more focused time on the subject. In the presentations of my one and two week College Board workshops for A.P. Chemistry Instructors, I both recommend the use of the software to the participants, as well as providing hands-on opportunities to peruse the software. In addition to use with my own my AP Chemistry students, I also use interactive portions the software with my Chemistry I students. While it could be easily used as a replacement for a thick and expensive chemistry textbook, I have found it to be very valuable as a supplemental tool. It is terrific as a review tool for many students. For students who have missed time in class for one reason or another, it is absolutely irreplaceable. Kids who have missed my discussion of a topic get to hear a variety of voices describing the chemistry. Other students might need to hear an idea several times and this DVD allows them to hear a different set of voices presenting the chemistry after I do. The interactive questions give all students immediate feedback as to how well they are assimilating the chemistry. Every college and AP or honors chemistry teacher should look carefully at this DVD. - David W. What I also liked about the DVD is the exercises part where it was timed and it would tell you if you are taking too much time to do a problem. This is helpful because sometimes reading the solution is hard to understand. I also like the DVD because the price is reasonable and it is everything the textbook has plus more! Overall, the DVD is a valuable tool to learn Chemistry and has helped me significantly increase my average grade in a class that is much harder than first semester. - Taylor MacDonald Your DVD has enhanced my learning of chemistry. It provides the opportunity to learn the material without actually being inside a classroom. I did not use the DVD last semester because I liked the old-fashioned way of learning from a textbook and lecture notes. I am emailing you in regards to the Chemistry DVD you have designed for the CHEM 1035/1036 course. I want to first start off by saying Thank You! Thank you for putting in seven hard years worth of effort and hard work into creating a useful tool for your students. I find the DVD to be absolutely enriching it's great to be able to hear a concept for further repetition and review. As you may recall, I had a different professor last semester for CHEM 1035. She only used the book for her homework assignments, but mainly used PowerPoints. While she was a decent teacher, it would have been much more beneficial to me to have another aid that the teacher uses. My professor barely used the book for instruction. With you this semester and your DVD, I am not only able to use the class notes for studying, but I am also able to useyour DVD for reinforcement. Your idea is simply superb. I can take it anywhere I go, since it is lightweight! I also love how you incorporated interactive problems, along with full, written out solutions. Since some of your students may be auditory learners, I also love how you put in voices that read out the problems or the notes on the various Chemistry Subject. The DVD was also very beneficial when it came time to prepare for an examination, as the exam presented similar questions. I really liked practicing with the questions. One thing I did notice with the DVD (only on VERY few problems) is that while you show a correct answer to a problem, if a student desires to view the full solution to it, the full-out solution presents a different answer than the one obtained. This only applies to very few questions on the DVD. At times, this was confusing, but I eventually realized that the answer not shown in the worked out solution was correct. Overall, thanks again for such a wonderful learning device. My parents and sister have seen your DVD, and congratulate you on your brilliance for putting all of this together. It simplifies all the concepts so that we can understand them then gradually starts to get more complex. Also it provides plenty of practice problems for each concept so that you can test your knowledge and if you get one wrong then most there is a helpful solution set which shows you how to do all the problems. I recommend this DVD to anyone who is in general chemistry whether you are in his class or not because I really do not think that if you do not understand a certain concept, the DVD will instantly make sense to any student. Each chapter is taught thoroughly and includes interactive problems providing step by step solutions to help make sure one truly understands the concepts that were just covered. There are also many videos and diagrams through out the entire DVD to help show the concepts that are being taught and provide a better understanding. Chemistry is known the be one of the toughest fields to learn and master, but Professor Trivedi's DVD provides a clear pathway to truly understand this very difficult subject. - Tom Carroll The DVD is really great. I wish I had some constructive criticism, but quite frankly I don't. It is a little fast-paced for my learning style, but since there is a pause button I can't complain. As someone who struggled in high school with chemistry, the DVD has made it not only bearable but also understandable. - Sarah Beth Slabach I personally see the General Chemistry DVD by Ketan Trivedi, as the best aid for the General Chemistry course. More so than the actual textbook. I have never learned Chemistry so easily. It teaches students the step by step process in the various math equations, after teaching them the general concept behind the equations. It provides interactive practice problems for the student to test their own knowledge. The DVD has been a miracle for me and has truly taught my Chemistry. The lectures are always nice and teach me as well, but the DVD ensures that I know the material and truly tests my ability to understand the problems. The extent to which the DVD covers each topic is excellent and the variety of practice problems appear to be infinite. The only drawback that I see to the DVD are the sometimes monotone voices. Similar to lectures the voices on the DVD can get boring; however, the variety of voices and integration of both female and male voices on the DVD keeps it somewhat entertaining. Overall, I have no complaints about the DVD and have seen GREAT results from practicing with the DVD. My grades have improved quite a bit, since I have regularly started listening and practicing with the DVD. I suggest that any student taking Chemistry their freshman year in college purchase this DVD. It would be well worth their money, if they use the DVD properly and take advantage of the practice problems and material provided to them on the DVD. - Katharine Hammaker

I could actually take the course without a lecturer and use just the DVD - ksingh24@vt.edu The General Chemistry DVD that I use for my General Chemistry class here at Virginia Tech is great. It is the perfect study aid because it has everything we need to know in one place and it has a lot of examples for practicing the concepts and calculations that we are required to know. It is nice to hear what it is that we are learning as well. It's like having a lecture outside of lecture. It has helped me so much this year. -Annie Miner I love using the DVD. It is a fantastic study tool, and provides a multitude of practice problems to do. It is especially helpful to have the interactive sections for the chapters, and the interactive explanations and step-by-step explanations for practice problems. One thing that can sometimes frustrate me with the DVD is that the enter key on my number pad on my keyboard registers as a false answer a lot of times. Also, there will be an occasional practice problem that does not have the correct answer option, but when you view the solution, it gives you the correct answer (this is only for 3 or 4 problems that I have done so far out of over 120 problems). The DVD is one of the most effective and reliable sources and tools I have ever used to gain a full understanding of the material for class. The DVD is organized so well and in a manner that helps make the material easier to gain a full, deep, and lasting understanding on that blows the textbook out of the water. The textbook does not have nearly as good practice problems, or when I found good practice problems and was not able to complete them. However, with the DVD there are hundreds of problems and when I don't know how to do one, the DVD has an interactive method that helps me learn how to solve each type of problem. As a general chemistry student it was one of the best investments I have ever made and I know it will continue to pay off for the rest of this semester but also again when I use it to help study for the MCATS. I wish I could have this sort of learning tool in all of my classes. - Tyler Corley Pros: This DVD offers many possible ways to use formulas/concepts while offering the step by step process to solve practice problems. This feature allows students to practice on various types of problems and concepts regarding a specific topic with great ease and assistance. The DVD also covers a wide range of topics relevant to many chemistry topics that allow for either review on previous topics from past semesters (if you are in the second semester) and allows you to practice for a further topic in the syllabus giving an advantage when you reach said topic in the lecture. Cons: The DVD does have some problems on various operating systems. Regarding the one I am currently using, Windows Vista Home Edition, the DVD is only playable if I run the executable file as an administrator. While this is a slight hindrance when I try to use the DVD it is not detrimental and therefore not a large concern. - Evan Magner The DVD is a very useful tool. It is definitely more helpful than the textbook, because it is so interactive. It has definitely helped me be a successful student in Mr. Trivedi¹s classes. Many other General Chemistry students in other courses that do not use the DVD seem to struggle more with the course and the exams. It serves as a substitute for a Chemistry tutor. The format is simple to understand, and it is easy to follow. The DVD is easy to navigate and is very user friendly so that switching between topics and chapters is a breeze. It has helped broaden my knowledge of chemistry and I have learned so much from it that I know I will remember as I continue my journey into medical school. The interactive problems, in my opinion, are the best part of the DVD, as if I do not understand how to do the problem, I am walked through it step by step.
