Start Up Info
Congratulations; and thank you for purchasing the most innovative way to study General Chemistry!
Please take a few minutes to read how to take advantage of all the unique features and capabilities of your new software.
Boot up instructions for PC and Mac copies are located on the envelope containing the DVD. Please be sure to ascertain the ‘drive’ letter associated with your computers DVD-Rom drive. You will be asked to enter this letter when you boot up for the first time. Vista users should make sure they read the additional instructions listed at the end of this sheet.
The navigational arrows and buttons are described fully if you hit the ‘Help’ button that is located on the bottom of the Main Page. Take a few minutes to see all the controls available.
It should be noted that it is best if you close all or most other programs when you run the DVD. Boot up time for this program can take up to 40 seconds.
As you proceed with the DVD you will see and hear the material presented to you. Some sections will be in a ‘lecture’ format and will explain the material being covered. You can mute the sound if you prefer to just read the material. If you mute the sound you can move the text along at any rate you find comfortable by using, PAUSE and the FORWARD and BACK arrows. After the lecture portions, you will find that you are asked to interact with the program. Using the keyboard and mouse you will be answering questions that are presented to you. By doing the interactive parts of the program, you will, in a non-intimidating way, determine just how well you understand the material.
You will be given two chances to answer any given question. Correct or partially correct answers will be confirmed in Green. Wrong or partially wrong sections will be in Red. After the second attempt, wrong portions will have the correct answers displayed.
You will see a ‘tool’ bar at the bottom of the screen.
All these functions are described in the, above mentioned, ‘help’ section. Some of the screens will have additional popup buttons. These buttons will access all needed tools or tables. Most common will be the Calculator button. In some cases, instructions for using the calculator will be shown on the screen in yellow text.
Another popup button is the NOTES button. (there may be a short wait for the notes to appear). Whatever chapter you are in, those notes will appear. However you can move to any other chapter by going to the top of the page and clicking any other chapter you wish to view. These notes can be printed in html. or pdf. formats. NOTES are the actual text for the non-interactive sections of each chapter. If you need to review the material while away from the computer you can use this print option.
Another common popup button you will use is the SOLUTIONS button. There are actually three types of problem sets associated with each chapter. Two types have solutions. The first type will audio/visually describe how to solve the problem. The second type will interactively ‘lead’ you through, to the solution/s. A third and final set will not have solutions.
If you hit the NOTES button on the MAIN MENU page, you will see an index of all the sub-sections of the DVD. From this table of contents you can go directly to any portion of the DVD. For an instructor, this is especially useful if you wish to pick and choose the videos or graphics demos that are contained in the DVD, for use during class.
Other popup buttons will take you to a Glossary, INDEX,(searchable), and various tables and formulas.
Other programs your computer should have to fully use
